Yet, aside from all the romantic life in nature, living on a boat comes with challenges: practically, but also politically. Boaters are a minority that struggles for representation and the fulfilment of unique needs.

Our reporter Theo Dennert visited a boater in Banbury and went aboard a narrowboat to investigate.

The Red Star’s Food Hygiene rating has also been downgraded to zero.

The restaurant, located at 187 Cowley Road, had been investigated by the Oxford City Council. “Concerns were raised regarding the improper storage of commercial waste at Red Star, which resulted in an inquiry by the Community Response Team,” said Councillor Lubna Arshad.

During the inspection, further food and kitchen hygiene issues were discovered, according to the council.

At a hearing at Oxford’s Magistrates’ Court on 31 October, the Red Star was found in violation of Section 47 of the Environmental Protection Act of 1990. Law requires businesses to store their waste sustainably and orderly.

The Red Star declined to comment on the fine.

The restaurant had received poor Food Hygiene reviews before. In September, its rating was set at one star, indicating the need for “major improvement”.

A complicated exit from the European Union, a global pandemic and seven Prime Ministers all in the last decade, has sent the UK political scene into a chaotic level of change. Nevertheless, some platformed MPs spouting bigotry against a particular minority group has remained the same. Even more so, the tendency for additional comments to follow after these, targeting different minority groups, stays extremely reliable. However, what is just as engrained in history is these minorities’ ability to come together to fight against a common enemy.

Reform UK have recently become an example of both of these contradictory elements of the UK political world. With the traction their anti-immigration policies have brought the party, they threaten the UK’s norm of two-party politics between the Labour Party and the Conservatives. Simultaneously, some of its members only added to the long-established issue of prejudice in politics, made clear through ITV’s recent investigation.

During a year spent undercover within Reform UK, ITV reporters found multiple members of the party making racist, Islamophobic and sexist remarks. Comments included that “no more than 1% of [the] British population can be non-white”, stated by Alan Feeney, and another male councillor stated he would sexually assault another female candidate if given the chance to hug her.

In a statement made to ITV News, Reform UK explained they were investigating the report’s findings, and that “a handful of individuals who do not share our values will initially make it through vetting”.

The widespread reaction of outrage, uniting the varying groups targeted by the comments and those affronted on their behalf, has highlighted an important fact of modern life regardless of the investigation into Reform UK; an incredible noise and impact can be made when different groups fight a common battle for equality. When this united noise manifests as a protest, any previous impact is massively amplified.

Ian Mckendrick, the vice chair of Oxfordshire Stand Up To Racism, a nationwide organisation who regularly protest against racism, Islamophobia and antisemitism, passionately affirms this sentiment.

He stated that “Protests exert a political pressure that can challenge dominant narratives – in this case that racism is a valid part of mainstream politics”.

People of colour, women and other minorities hold a long history of passionate protesting for their own rights. Campaigns such as the Suffragette movement and the US Civil Rights movement were extremely significant to contributing to modern day human rights. However, there was little union of different groups. The Suffragette movement was made up of predominantly white women, and women within the Civil Rights movement often felt shut down due to being a woman.

A focus on community groups, trade unions and more uniting for a common cause, especially in protest, is a relatively new idea, but where did it initially start from, and why is it still so important today?

A United Front and the Anti-Nazi League

When history has seen far-right, fascist groups, it is incredibly rare that they only target one minority. It therefore makes sense that when minorities are targeted by anyone, not just these groups, they challenge these views as one group, building up strength in numbers.

What may seem obvious to us these days, was suggested by Leon Trotsky, a Marxist political theorist. He proposed a need for a united front in 1922, explaining that the oppressed needed to join together to rally against a common enemy. Whilst the approach was not necessarily used by earlier movements like the Suffragettes, the idea has been vital to modern anti-fascist and anti-racism organisations’ success.

The Battle of Lewisham, taking place on 13 August 1977, showed this in action. In response to a march by the National Front (NF), a far-right political party, All Lewisham Campaign Against Racism and Fascism (ALCARAF) united a wide range of organisations to outnumber and prevent the NF from marching from New Cross to Lewisham. They were successful in stopping members of the NF march from reaching the final rally destination.

The Anti-Nazi League (ANL) was formed in the UK in 1977 in inspiration of the battle, and the campaign fully adopted the concept of a united front to campaign against the NF. In the 70s, the NF were gaining popularity, as in the October 1974 general election they secured almost 114,000 votes. The ANL also campaigned against the British Movement, a UK Neo-Nazi organisation.

The ANL focused on forming alliances with groups as part of their anti-fascist and anti-racist campaign more effectively, for example the Indian Worker’s Association, trade unions and members of the Labour Party.

The league brought these diverse groups together to hold demonstrations against racism and fascism, as well as hosting the free Northern Carnival event, a concert, in collaboration with the Rock Against Racism. The actions of the campaign resulted in the National Front performing badly in the 1979 general election and their popularity reducing.

The ANL wrapped up in 1981, but relaunched in 1992 to fight against the British National Party, another far-right political party. This was prompted by a Unity Carnival hosted by Anti-Fascist Action, which again encouraged the use of a united front. Groups came together to enable a stronger fight, and as a result pushed an even wider anti-fascism campaign through inspiring a relaunch of the ANL.

During this time, the ANL became involved in demonstrations against the killing of black teenager Stephen Lawrence, and helped to establish Love Music Hate Racism. In 2003, the league then merged into Unite Against Fascism.

Unite Against Fascism and Stand Up To Racism

Unite Against Fascism is the merger between the Anti-Nazi League and the National Assembly Against Racism. It retains the ANL’s focus on uniting multiple community groups, trade unions and members of political parties to fight against fascism and racism, aiming for equality for all.

Unite Against Fascism continued holding anti-fascist events with many groups in attendance, and held counter-demonstrations against the British National Party, similar to the ANL.

The groups’ focus gradually shifted from the British National Party to the English Defence League, another far-right organisation that operated from 2009 to the mid-late 2010s.

Since 2013, Unite Against Fascism has mainly operated alongside its sister organisation Stand Up To Racism (SUTR). Their fight against racism, Islamophobia and antisemitism relies on community groups. Groups involved with the campaign centre a range of minority identities, for example disability rights groups or LGBTQ+ groups, to fight for a future benefitting everyone.

Each of SUTR’s local branches echo this sentiment, with Mr Mckendrick telling me it is more important than ever for groups to come together to defeat the rising threat of fascism.

“We are closer to fascism than at any time since the 1930s.

“For the first time in 50 years [as of November 2025] we have a small fascist group in Oxford that has been protesting almost weekly and is targeting anyone who disagrees with their politics of hate.

“The fascists use racism to divide and rule, but their goal is the physical smashing of all forms of democracy. It is in everyone’s interest to resist this”

In order to push this message, SUTR run the Together Alliance campaign. This focuses on achieving an alliance between different community groups, trade unions and MPs to fight against growing division. It is backed by 12 different groups including National Education Union and Greenpeace.

Different forms of discrimination based on how varying aspects of a person’s identity interact with each other, known as intersectionality, is also considered by the organisation and is particularly relevant when considering the Reform UK investigation.

SUTR run a woman-led campaign called Women Against the Far Right. Whilst the group strives for anti-racism in general, they hold a particular focus on the weaponisation of violence against women and girls by the members of the far right to justify racism. This sub-group remains consistently present at events held by SUTR.

This power is not only recognised within these groups, but confirmed in studies. A Brookings study found that “intersectional crowds tend to make social movements more durable and effective” and that “building broader coalitions across identity and background may be key to the resistance movement’s long-term success.”

Using this intersectionality to build a better future, SUTR are currently putting on 30 Unity marches across the UK to encourage community groups to unite in the fight against racism.

Its Oxfordshire branch held theirs recently on Saturday 17^th October, with 400 people in attendance and 22 community groups becoming involved. These numbers have increased since rallies taking place roughly this time in 2025.

With support growing, Mr Mckendrick hopes that these united front protests only help to further the progress already made by historical protests.

“History is full of examples where mass anti-racist protests have forced governments and institutions to change, from the US Civil Rights movement, the Anti-Nazi League, and the Stephen Lawrence campaign, to the Black Lives Matter movement.

The protest itself can inspire further antiracist activity.”

The comments found in ITV’s investigation into Reform UK have allowed us as a society to consider the history and value of intersectional protest as a whole, disregarding Reform UK’s involvement. Throughout a history of racism, and other prejudice, groups coming together in the face of attacks works far more effectively than any solo effort.

Whilst the forms these alliances have taken differ, I think we can be certain that the sentiment behind these groups will now always remain. New anti-racism campaigns may arise, as well as the merging of groups together to fight for other human rights, for example LGBTQ+ rights or worker’s rights. However, now we know that to get the job done, we have to work together.

Vis uses a needle to erase his fingerprints. He penetrates his top skin layers, not only on the fingertips but on his whole hand. Then, he applies hard-to-remove superglue and glitter. “Because the scanners can’t capture that very well, anything reflective works,” he says.

All of that pain and self-harm is to avoid identification. Vis sees it as a response to police repression. He is a 23-year-old activist, fighting for action against climate change in Germany.

He used to do that full-time, in the nation’s capital, Berlin. One of his most prominent protests: a months-long forest occupation in the form of a treetop camp to block the expansion of Tesla’s giga-factory near Berlin in 2024.

Vis helped to erect treehouses, building up infrastructure to complicate police raids and social structures to sustain a small, semi-permanent community of campaigners. The result was an airy village up in the pine trees of eastern Germany, made of wood and tarps and ropes and progressive activists.

Banners stretched between the structures read “Water is a human right!” or “Forest instead of asphalt”. The camp’s inhabitants said they were fighting against the woodland’s destruction and the endangerment of the local drinking water due to the planned expansion of the nearby car plant.

Vis spent some nine months in that forest holdout. His real name is not Vis. He spoke on the condition of anonymity.

His activism takes on many forms, and a lot of it is related to the climate crisis. He is driven by a deep sense of injustice. Injustice of police action, injustice of the wider capitalist system, and: injustice among generations.

Indeed, intergenerational justice is a hot-button issue in Germany right now. The country is publicly debating reinstating a mandatory military service for young people. The government took the first step in that direction in December 2025 and also agreed on a multi-billion euro pension bill, paid for by the younger population.

And, of course, there’s the looming threat of climate catastrophe. The nationwide Fridays for Future movement was very popular among young Germans at the end of the 2010s, especially with students going on “school strike for the climate”.

They shouted: “We are here, we are loud, because you are stealing our future!”

Intergenerational justice, meaning the fair distribution of societal burdens, freedoms, resources, and welfare between present and future generations, moves people across Europe. A 2017 survey found that on average, more than half of all Europeans feel that their generation is not treated fairly and that government decisions do not take into account the financial impact on future generations.

“Injustice was more of a feeling that I lived through,” says Vis. “There is anger towards generations that brought me into a position to have to stand up. And then to have the authority to push back and say that everything is fine as it is and that we should keep going like that.”

He describes his pain and frustration. “On the one hand, there is this great structural unfairness relating to exploitation and intergenerational justice. Futures are being ruined.

“But there is also the feeling of being abandoned,” Vis explains, “from society as a whole.”

Other climate activists have similar concerns about the treatment of younger and future generations. Pajo, 32, a German activist at Extinction Rebellion, warns that the effects of climate change are going to increasingly affect coming generations.

“And at that point the main contributors are already dead or simply very old,” he says.

Climate change is inherently linked to intergenerational justice. According to UNICEF, “we know that past and present generations have caused an accumulation of greenhouse gases, while future generations will bear the brunt of the impacts.”

And in 2022, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) found that “beyond 2040 and depending on the level of global warming, climate change will lead to numerous risks to natural and human systems.” For Europe, these are heat, drought, flooding, and sea level rise.

That is why Vis was also part of the Last Generation, a climate protest group that dominated the German public discourse in 2022 and 2023. Their M.O.: gluing themselves to the asphalt, creating street blockades.

Dressed in orange high-vis vests, activists brought the capital’s traffic to a halt, temporarily paused airport operations, or spray-painted buildings in their signature orange—such as Berlin’s most famous landmark, the Brandenburg Gate.

The German state struck back with force. “There was a lot of police brutality in the form of pain grips, sexist searches, and just repression,” Vis recollects. “For example, there were cops taking off their badges and then just starting to beat.”

He says that added to his sense of injustice and desperation. Criminal prosecutions against the protesters practising civil disobedience were plentiful and resulted in fines and prison sentences.

But climate activists are oftentimes willing to accept repercussions in light of what they perceive to be an existential threat to humanity and nature.

Pajo advocates for violence-free disobedience. “We want to highlight a greater injustice. We know that we’re breaking the law, even if it is good in many parts.”

Vis says when it comes to extending his protest beyond legality, he draws the line at harming humans. But: “We are in a catastrophe in which human lives are at stake.

“That means, I think, that morally, property damage is definitely reasonable.”

In protest against Tesla’s Berlin giga-factory, a power pole was set on fire, temporarily paralysing the car plant. “I think that was effective,” says Vis.

However, he doesn’t think that the climate protest movement is necessarily turning more radical. “I think that would mean disregarding how effective repressions are.”

Although he thinks it’s difficult to assign blame for the situation in which the world finds itself, he says that older generations had a responsibility to rebel, like he does.

Fairness between generations isn’t discussed prominently enough in Germany, finds 18-year-old Laura Fabeck, who volunteers at the Foundation for the Rights of Future Generations.

“We contend that by now we are living in a gerontocracy,” a rule of the old. “Because political decisions and decision-makers are so much influenced by older voters,” Ms Fabeck argues.

“In some ways, gerontocracy and democracy are interdependent right now, because we simply have the majorities in the older societal classes,” explains Prof. Bernward Gesang, who teaches philosophy at the University of Mannheim.

In Germany, almost 30% of people are above 60, but only 19% are under 20, according to government statistics.

“We should think about whether we need to place younger generations under minority protection,” suggests Prof. Gesang.

The German constitution states that “the state protects, also in responsibility to the future generations, the natural basis of life,” and the Supreme Court ruled in 2021 that the state has “the obligation to protect life and health from the dangers of climate change,” also regarding future generations.

Prof. Gesang thinks the courts need to continue to deal with these questions.

“The most important thing is that we institutionalise intergenerational justice somehow,” argues Ms Fabeck. “That means we need to craft laws and rules that clearly state that there has to be intergenerational justice.”

The result of inaction would be particularly painful in the case of the climate crisis. The name of Pajo’s organisation, Extinction Rebellion, refers to the fight against literal extinction.

Vis, too, remains active. But: His anti-Tesla protest camp was raided by police in November 2024. Some of the protesters had to get dragged out of their tree houses by police climbers.

And the Last Generation officially ceased to do road blockades in early 2024. The activists have somewhat switched to different methods to pursue climate justice.

“I think justice is more of a process than a state,” says Pajo. “Especially when you look at it in such absolute, huge dimensions, between generations, there will never be total justice. But we should strive to create it in as many places as possible.”

Census data from the Office for National Statistics shows that their numbers have increased by 35.6%. That is still lower than the overall increase across England and Wales of almost 43%.

In absolute numbers, Oxford has seen its Muslim population grow from about 10,300 to 14,100 in ten years. That means that as of 2021, 8.7% of the city’s population was Muslim, making Islam Oxford’s second most popular religion. In all of England and Wales, the share lies at only 6.5%.

Still, Muslims are very much in the minority in Oxford. The number of Christians is almost four and a half times higher. And just as many people identify as having no religion whatsoever.

Tasnim Al-Hadidi, 23, a Muslim International Security Master’s student at Oxford Brookes University, describes her religion as a core foundation of her being.

Her beliefs give her guidance and inform “how I perceive life and how I understand life,” she said. She is balancing her religious practice with her duties as a student, combining some of the five daily prayers and sticking to the fasting rules during Ramadan.

Muhammad Ayaz, an 18-year-old first-year studying Motorsport Engineering at Brookes, also said that he had no difficulties balancing uni and faith.

“For me, Islam is much, much more than just a religion. It’s a lifestyle,” he replied to my inquiry. His actions are informed by his faith and religious teachings. “Without Islam, there’s realistically nothing for me to strive towards,” Mr Ayaz wrote.

“As a Muslim, I can always turn to Allah. I’m never alone, not in my highest, nor in my lowest.”

Not everyone needs to be part of an Islamic community to fulfil their spiritual needs.

“For me, when I practice religion, it’s very personal,” said Ms Al-Hadidi. “So I really don’t mind not having a community.”

But for those who are seeking the company of other Muslims, there are offers. There is an Islamic Society at Brookes, as well as a chaplain, and multi-faith prayer rooms—not to mention the various mosques spread throughout Oxford.

The significant increase in the city’s Muslim population matches a worldwide trend. The Pew Research Center found that Islam was the fastest-growing religion during the 2010s and had reached a share of more than a quarter of the world’s population.

Yet, as of 2020, only 2.2% of Muslims lived in Europe.

Returning to Oxford, the number of Muslims has shot up decisively in some areas. In Barton, a quiet and hilly suburb on the city’s eastern edge, the count of residents professing to Islam has risen by 128% from 2011 to 2021.

These upward trends stand in stark contrast to a 15.3% decrease in Christians. Meanwhile, the number of people without any religious affiliation has grown by a quarter.

Despite the fact that 3.9 million Muslims are part of English and Welsh society, public opinion is severely skewed against Islam. According to a 2025 YouGov poll, 53% think that the religion is not compatible with British values.

And a relative majority of 41% feel that Muslim immigrants have a negative impact on the UK.

The headline findings of a new House of Commons report show the apparent consequences of that sentiment: “Muslims in the UK face increasing levels of online, verbal, and physical abuse and discrimination.”

Similarly, Tell MAMA, an organisation documenting Islamophobia, saw a 165% increase in reported and verified cases of anti-Muslim hatred from 2022 to 2024.

Although it may only serve as anecdotal evidence, Ms Al-Hadidi said she didn’t experience any discrimination in Oxford so far. Neither did Mr Ayaz, who wrote that everyone had been quite welcoming.

As part of a religious minority, Mr Ayaz has mostly non-Muslim friends. “They’re extremely supportive. A few of them have even been fasting all of Ramadan with me out of choice, just to support and feel what it’s like,” he wrote.

“I think it helps that Oxford is a very diverse area.”

He feels supported and respected for who he is. And despite the aforementioned statistics about Islamophobia, Mr Ayaz is very open about his identity.

“I don’t hide the fact that I’m Muslim,” he wrote. “I’m not scared of people knowing who I am.”

As the start of the new academic year gets left behind, and deadlines for mid-term assessments start creeping up, the need to focus on studies increases. Although Oxford boasts of many beautiful libraries where one can do work whilst simultaneously imagining themselves as belonging in Dead Poets Society, sometimes a café cannot be beaten as a chosen study spot.

The vital question, however, is which café should you pick to achieve your academic dreams. It can be hard to know which places have the space to allow students to camp out on their laptops for hours, or truly have reliable service to assist any research. Luckily for you, I’ve tried and tested the cafés of Oxford to determine which ones can earn the title as one of the best study spots.

Missing Bean, Turl Street

If you leave the bus from Oxford Brookes main campus into the city centre at Queen Street, Missing Bean will be the first café on my list that you come across. After walking two minutes up High Street, you can find it tucked down one of its side streets.

The inviting café provides an extensive range of different coffees to keep your brain caffeinated, as well as a variety of tea flavours. The wide selection of pastries, always filling up the window display, also makes Missing Bean the best choice if you want to start your study day early, and in the right way with a motivating breakfast. My personal favourite is their flaky morning bun, but there truly is a pastry for everyone.

The seating sits on the right side of the café as you enter, and although limited, offers a large table for group work, and many solo tables to grant you more focused study time. Seating expands outside, but this depends on season and weather. In order to successfully get a seat, I recommend going earlier rather than later. Despite the steady flow of customers, the café has a calming atmosphere guaranteed to help you crack out an essay.

Caffé Nero in Blackwell’s Bookshop, Broad Street

Just around the corner from Missing Bean stands the infamous Blackwell’s Bookshop, and this almost 150-year-old Broad Street staple houses my second recommendation; Caffé Nero. If you can successfully make it up the first flight of stairs without becoming distracted by their wide range of books, you will find the cosy café tucked into the closest corner.

An impressive amount of seating manages to fit within the café without leaving coffee drinkers feeling too cramped, and all are provided with easy to log into wifi. If you need to spread flashcards and revision guides out, a large table sits in the middle of the café’s main section. Equally if you wish to pop yourself in a secluded corner, plenty of tables for two, thankfully many with plug sockets, sit to the side. Both of these spots will also provide respite when you’re looking to take a much-needed break, as there is a clear view of some of Oxford’s architectural marvels: the Sheldonian Theatre and the History of Science Museum.

This “home away from home”, as Caffé Nero market themselves, also possesses the added bonus of offering a 15% off student discount for any food and drink from the vast menu, lessening any guilt about eating into your loan. For an even better bargain, Vodafone customers are regularly given £2 drink offers, which you can also use your student discount on top of.

The Independent Café, St. Aldate’s

Away from the often-manic hustle and bustle in the very centre of the city, the Independent Café gives any stressed-out student a relaxing environment to help with their productivity and hard work.

Within its minimalistic open space, the café offers a variety of different seating options suiting anyone, no matter whether you prefer to work by getting comfy on a sofa or perching on a stall by the window bench. The area’s reliable phone service makes up for its slight downfall of not so reliable wifi, as using a hotspot will quickly make online work possible. Plug sockets for any student’s charging needs are also spread around.

Already having a fantastic core drinks menu, it is the seasonal drinks offered by the Independent Café which really work to motivate any slow-going work. Consistent studying throughout the university year means the seasons can often pass you by as a student, but offerings of pumpkin spice lattes and festive hot chocolates quickly bring you back to reality. Combined with any of the sourdough toasties on the lunch menu, this study spot remains a reliable favourite of mine.

GAIL’s Bakery, Jericho

Whilst being a more expensive option, GAIL’s Bakery is perfect for those days you are severely lacking any motivation. Only a short walk from Oxford’s city centre in Jericho, you will find the large majority of café goers inside furiously typing away on their laptops, making it the perfect working destination.

Although it is the largest study spot featured on this list, its calming atmosphere and gentle musical soundtrack means seats get filled up quickly. There are almost always seats available outside in the chilly autumnal weather, but to get a coveted indoor seat I would recommend arriving either first thing in the morning, or just before the afternoon school rush. The opportunity to grab one of the tables near a plug socket, or the window bench allowing for people watching on breaks makes an early morning worth it.

GAIL’s offer a selection of classic, reliable drinks, with its rich hot chocolate and warming chai latte especially never disappointing. To accompany a morning study session, I find their sourdough toast or chocolate babka is the perfect snack to chomp away at whilst reading some challenging journal articles.

Tree Artisan Café, Jericho

Barely a minute walk down the street from GAIL’s, Tree Artisan Café is a great alternative choice if you’re looking to support a female-led, independent business through your studying. Its welcoming atmosphere is immediately apparent as you enter, and its aim to offer customers “a moment of peace and motivation to fuel your journey” means you can comfortably settle into a long essay writing session.

Despite being the smallest in size of my recommendations, the café still offers tables dedicated to laptop users, each marked with a clear sticker. There are plug sockets available, as well as free reliable wifi meaning there is no need to spend any time downloading reading before entering the café.

In my opinion, ultimately the best and most unique offering of the café is their impressive latte art, stretching from bunnies to seahorses, and should seriously be taken into your decision of where to work. The surprise at what will be turning up on your coffee always provides a boost of energy to complete any task. If that wasn’t enough, their wide selection of well-filled baguettes and bagels are perfect to provide a mid-day pick-me-up.

The love triangle is a trope as old as time, and whether you were on team Edward or Jacob for Bella in Twilight, or team Peeta or Gale for Katniss in The Hunger Games, you will know the debate between sides in online fandoms is intense. Ask a passionate fan of any of these relationships, and they would probably reel off reasons why the opposite side of the love triangle should burn in the fiery pits of hell – yet realistically, no bad blood can be found between the fans.

However, when one of the pairings in a love triangle is queer, and the sexuality of the person at the centre of the love triangle is up to debate within the fandom, this is when things can turn genuinely nasty.

Stranger Things, admittedly, is not a show that centres love triangles. Throughout its decade long run, the show snowballed into a one-of-a-kind phenomenon thanks to its dynamic ensemble cast, horrifying mysteries and unsettling plot twists. As the anniversary of the show’s fifth and final season approaches, fans continue to look back upon the new revelations it brought the audience.

None caused more excitement than volume one’s cliffhanger. As demogorgons go for the kill at three members of the party, Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) is revealed to have powers, snapping each demogorgon dead.

Despite many fans having speculated this, it was Will’s acceptance of his sexuality, helped by an earlier speech from the show’s other confirmed queer main character Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke), that allowed him to reach this potential.

Whilst this successfully empowered queer viewers, in others it inspired loud anti-LGBTQ+ attitudes, mainly due to another motivating factor for Will’s powers; his love for his best friend, Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard).

Here is where Stranger Things’ most controversial love triangle arises. Although widely theorised by fans before, season four of the show confirmed that Will was gay, and in love with Mike, all while Mike was dating Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), a telekinetic superhero.

As expected, fans quickly and passionately took sides to prove their favourite couple would win. Most mined the source material for clues, hoping to find that one piece of diamond which proved that, yes, they would in fact win. Yet this also exposed the eagerness at which many jumped to homophobia as an argument.

In my research on this issue, I found countless examples of where this came to play over many years in different situations.

Despite being a show encouraging viewers to theorise, some fans’ readings of Mike Wheeler as queer were quickly responded to with rage, offended at the implication that a character that had so far presented as straight could be read as queer. These readings are often labelled creepy, and there are countless incidents of people insisting Mike is ‘normal’ instead of gay, othering the LGBTQ+ community in the way we have attempted to fight against for years.

Ari, a passionate Stranger Things fan who rooted for Mike and Will to become a couple, found these double standards between discussions of straight and queer couples led to even more troubling accusations being thrown their way.

‘A lot of the response was people interpreting it as, oh, you want to watch them have sex or something. They were kind of trying to say why do you want to sexualise this teenager’s relationship?’

The immediate assumption that queerness is inherently sexual, and harmful to ‘push’ onto younger people contributes to a dangerously homophobic environment, one which sometimes matches the homophobia present under the Reagan Bush administration from when Stranger Things is set.

The comments worsen when concerning Will’s confirmed sexuality and feelings. Tweets, TikTok comments and YouTube comments use Will’s sexuality to conform to the offensive portrayal of gay people as predators, presenting him as someone to be wary of. One twitter user stated that for Will to ‘make moves’ on Mike, it would be ‘#predatory’, which received over 750 likes.

Other harmful stereotypes which society has largely moved on from were also used. One twitter user claimed that Will will get AIDS, a very real, painful experience many gay and bisexual men faced in the 80s. Another twitter user stated ‘Will can find his own boyfriend. tell him to try the park’, using another outdated stereotype of gay hook up culture.

Through disguising these comments simply as a by-product of a heated love-triangle war, homophobia’s place in the Stranger Things fandom became increasingly rampant and normalised as volume one was released. However, just as every story comes to a conclusion, so do its love triangles.

The finale confirmed Mike and Eleven remained as the chosen couple - even if they didn’t get their happy ending - and despite being a cause for celebration for many, the homophobia never ceased for other fans. In fact, Ari explained that ‘after the aftermath of the finale, it really validated the homophobic people in their responses’.

Previous comments made in support of Will and Mike becoming a couple were consistently targeted with fierce reminders that the very possibility of a queer couple becoming a focus in a mainstream show was ‘delusional’ and laughable to even consider. Even more tragically, this response was completely expected.

Linney, a devoted fan whose academic work has stretched to the study of queer-baiting within Stranger Things, shared that after the finale, she ‘didn’t want to go online because [she] just knew what was going to happen.’

Her experiences as a queer woman increased her investment in gaining further LGBTQ+ representation on a mainstream show, leading to her sharing that she felt sick at the thought of how the love triangle might end. A comment that should have remained a vulnerable conversation between queer fans spiralled out of control after the finale.

‘I remember that it was really difficult for me because that was a period online where I truly felt like I had to go offline.

‘I had people finding personal information about me from my other accounts. They were trying to find my location, trying to tell my friends and family about what I was saying, even though I didn’t even say anything bad. And it was so scary.’

Not only did the latter half of the season reveal how far some fans were willing to go to create an uncomfortable and dangerous environment for LGBTQ+ fans, but it exposed how this response of homophobia was not limited as a backlash solely to a queer couple. Instead, any obvious queer representation was unwelcome to many; with the reaction to Will’s coming out scene making this overwhelmingly clear.

Threatened by the possibility of Vecna using his sexuality against him, Will emotionally came out to the party in the penultimate episode of the show. However, many of the audience were outraged by this inclusion and ‘review-bombed’ the episode, purposefully giving it one star reviews to show their distaste for a depiction of the queer experience. Even ten months later, the episode holds a 5.6 rating on IMDb, compared to an 8 star average in the season.

A large portion of the show’s fanbase consistently made fun of this scene, particularly its length, to the point where SNL created a skit out of the vulnerable moment. The lack of regard surrounding a sensitive and inspiring moment for queer fans personally affected Linney.

‘They were making fun of him, but I saw myself in him.

‘It takes so much confidence as a queer person to come out to people when it takes a while to do it. So the act of making fun of how long it takes someone to come out was really hurtful. And I imagine young people seeing that who haven’t come out would have been crushed.’

Outwardly homophobic attitudes continuing as the show concluded didn’t surprise fellow enthusiastic fan Julia.

‘The actual homophobic stuff […] hurts or maybe it shocks, but there’s people who are going to be like that sadly.

‘What impacts me most is not how the message is said, but how is it received and how, by a lot of people, they’re not going to notice or they’re going to follow or they’re even going to make the fire bigger.’

Such a strong distaste towards the coming out scene from the general audience, combined with an environment of normalised homophobia, led to the LGBTQ+ representation within the show being blamed for what many describe as a disappointing ending to the show. Accusations that the show became ‘too gay’ littered some of the general audience’s complaints of the season.

Julia believes that the audience hyper-focused on the coming out scene because ‘it was an opportunity to shift blame elsewhere.

‘Because of course, there’s going to be people complaining and of course there’s going to be people acting in some sort of way. But since [the finale] wasn’t that good and since the coming out scene happened just before the actual [final fight scene] that was supposed to be big and great and it wasn’t. Then it’s like, oh, now it’s gay, it’s bad because if it’s gay.’

This constant stream of normalised, often extreme homophobia can become especially overwhelming considering the content of Stranger Things. The show has always championed the outcast, telling the audience that differences are to be embraced, and is exactly what makes them special. To be thrown hostile comments in the face of difference, when many queer folk run to the show for this empowering message, is insulting.

Ari, Linney and Julia all told me that this experience has entirely changed how they will enter fandoms in the future. More fans I spoke to stated that now they did not want engage in fan discussion at all due to past experiences of being called homophobic slurs and mentally ill.

The intensity of homophobia towards queer readings and representation, and the speed at which some fans gravitate towards this argument, emphasises just how important having characters like Will and Robin on TV is to combat these attitudes.

Dr Alberto Mira, a reader of film studies at Oxford Brookes University, who specialises in queer representation in film, explained that ‘representation in a popular series, and something as popular as this, really helps both the straight community and the LGBT community.

‘It’s putting everybody together. You all watch the same things and it’s coming closer and coming together in that kind of thing. If you do something like gay movies, then only gay people go to see it, and it increases that sense of a bubble.’

‘Representation is important because it engages attention and also because a lot of homophobia, I think, is kind of contradicted by visibility. The more you see, the less homophobic you are. And I think this is very, very important.’

The Stranger Things fandom is only a small part of a much wider problem. Today’s culture of wildly popular streaming successes and accompanying discussions on social media opens up the possibility for a variety of opinions being shared on a piece of media, not all respectful.

Whilst Stranger Things may remain one of the most high-profile examples of this intense homophobia, history has already begun to repeat itself on Netflix’s hit show Bridgerton. The announcement that its next season will focus on the love story between Francesca Stirling and Michaela Stirling, a lesbian couple, has brought similar outrage and anger that Stranger Things received, and only works to prove the serious work we need to continue to normalise queer representation.

The potential power of seeing LGBTQ+ representation in mainstream shows should outweigh any fight over fictional characters endings. We need to see queerness loud and proud. With GLAADs Where We Are On TV 2024-2025 Report showing that 41% of the 489 LGBTQ+ characters on TV were not returning in 2026, the continued inclusion of queer characters, especially on shows as popular as Stranger Things remains more important than ever.

If characters like Will simply existing, and being imagined to be in a happy relationship equal to their friends, leads to this rampant homophobia, then it only helps to prove the point that we need characters like him, to change the minds of those who desperately want him off screen.

Comparison of data between the England and Wales Census 2011 and 2021 reveals that Barton is the only area in Oxford to have an increase of houses owned with a mortgage or loan over the ten years.

Although Barton’s increase of 1.1% may initially seem insignificant, ownership of houses with a mortgage or loan decreased significantly in every other Oxford area, and fell by 12.3% overall in Oxford.

Barton, an area in North East Oxford, is described by Barton resident Shane Dempsey as “always an area of the city that was undesirable”, and has higher rates of poverty than the Oxfordshire average.

However, the overall difference cannot be the result of residents in other areas of Oxford being more financially able to afford to pay their mortgage off, which would shift residents from owning their home through mortgage to outright ownership, rather than house ownership decreasing. All full house ownership in Oxford decreased by 3.2%.

The increase in Barton can be explained through the recent development of Barton Park, the largest residential development undertaken in Oxford since the 1970s, consisting of housing, a school and community sports facilities.

Development of the new housing estate began in 2015, and is set to finish by 2027. The first stage of this project was completed in 2020 and supplied 237 houses, with 95 being let at social rent.

New homes have allowed additional access to council housing, with social renting increasing in Barton, and given first-time buyers the opportunity to own their home. Barton Park enabling this speaks to all of Oxford’s desperate need for further housing.

A shortage of homes within Oxford has been a long continuing issue. Oxford is only a small contributor to the UK’s housing crisis, fuelled by population growth, increased life expectancies and changing lifestyles. The Government estimate 300,000 new homes are needed per year.

Scarcity of housing leads to acute affordability issues, with house prices rising due to fierce competition. Barton Park being the only substantial housing development in Oxford for the past 50 years leads to competition increasing between Oxford residents, therefore prices rise.

Furthermore, Mr Dempsey stated that “Barton has since been marketed as ‘Headington’ to make it more attractive which has attracted people from outside the city.”.

Headington is one of the most desirable places to live in Oxford, due to its peaceful green spaces, and access to hospitals and schools. Barton’s rebranding increases competition, and price, for housing even further.

The average house price in Barton over the last year was £427,000, £135,000 more than England’s average property value. Prices in Barton Park exceed Barton’s average by more than £150,000.

These prices are not accessible to the majority of Barton residents, with over 40% of residents living in social housing in 2021 and higher unemployment rates than the Oxfordshire average. As a result, resident James Buchanan stated “these properties have largely been purchased by non-Barton residents”.

This is further supported by Barton’s population rising the most of any Oxford area between 2011 and 2021. In contrast, Oxford’s overall population decreased.

The wealth divide within Barton is clear, both from the easier access to facilities for the houses on the Headington-Barton border than houses further into Barton, and through the residents of Barton Park and the rest of Barton. 77% of Barton Park residents feel they have the skills and/or qualifications to find employment, compared to 66% in Barton, according to Oxfordshire County Council.

In order to provide pre-existing residents the opportunity of affordable home ownership, more housing is needed to reduce intense competition.

The Oxford Local Plan 2036, set out by Oxford City Council, focuses on the importance of good quality affordable homes in the right locations.

The affordability gap in Oxford is so extreme that the Government’s standard of affordable rent, rented at 80% of the weekly gross market rent, cannot apply to Oxford. The benchmark for affordability instead within Oxford’s plan is that rent and/or mortgage should be 35% or less of net household income.

More housing developments are currently in progress, such as Canalside in Oxford North, and Northfield in Littlemore. However, there are no plans for a development matching the size of Barton Park, despite Oxford City Council’s aim to build 15,000 new homes as closely to Oxford as possible.

Long hours looking into microscopes, and sheets of calculations and graphs stacking up is probably what most people imagine when asked to picture the scientists in the academically renowned city of Oxford. But what if I told you that isn’t true?

With a third of 16–24-year-olds stating that school put them off science, according to the Institute for Research in Schools, it is more important than ever to show everyone how exciting science can be. This is precisely what Oxford Science and Ideas Festival are aiming to do. The annual two-week event makes science fun, and completely accessible to neurodivergent individuals. This video explores why and how everyone should be involved, even if you don’t believe you’re a scientist.

Recently, even the most passionate period-drama fans could be forgiven for becoming slightly overwhelmed by the sheer range of Jane Austen adaptations offered to audiences, and yet Georgia Oakley’s 2026 version of Sense and Sensibility provides a fresh and charming take which absolutely must not be missed. Between balancing moments of quiet reflection and trademark Austen wit, the film successfully absorbs the audience into the romances of regency society.

We are once again welcomed back to Norland Park, the home of Elinor Dashwood (Daisy Edgar Jones) – a considerate young woman who thinks with her head rather than her heart – and her younger sister Marianne (Esmé Creed-Miles) – a free spirit unapologetic about her blind pursuit for passionate love. As they reel from their father’s recent death and the lack of funds it has left them with, the sisters are forced to hand over their family home to their half-brother. In this process Elinor meets Edward Ferrars (George MacKay), the endearingly awkward brother of her sister-in-law. Sabotaged by their own reluctance to prioritise themselves, the two face further problems through the Dashwood’s move to Devon. For Marianne, however, Devon brings both Colonel Brandon (Herbert Nordrum), stoic and serious, and Mr Willoughby (Frank Dillane), charming and boyish.

Any soul brave enough to attempt adapting Austen’s work, in particular one which already has a beloved 1995 version full to the brim of national treasures, treads a fine line between remaining loyal to the source material, whilst also providing a new interpretation to engage and excite the audience. Thankfully, Oakley’s direction and Diana Reid’s screenplay work together to create just this; a witty homage to the characters Austen has created, and a unique depiction of the regency world.

Although there were some occasional issues with pacing, Reid’s screenplay fortunately does not commit the cardinal sin of becoming so preoccupied with ensuring each character is well-spoken and posh enough to fit into the regency period, that any personality distinguishing them from each other is non-existent. Each of Austen’s carefully created characters leap off the page directly onto our screen, retaining the flourishes and flaws which make them so loveable in the first place. The humour in Marianne’s melodramatics of having to greet her extended family and Mrs Jennings’ (Fiona Shaw) endless ramblings are perfectly balanced with tender moments of sisterhood and love in whatever form it takes.

These characters ultimately become truly alive through the actors’ transformative portrayals, allowing us to feel every emotion alongside them. The film boasts a strong main cast, ignoring a few supporting actors who gave weaker performances. The main star of the show, and rightfully so, is Daisy Edgar-Jones’ quiet and considered performance as Elinor Dashwood. She is able to show the depth to Elinor’s internal conflict between the need to keep up her sensible and logical appearance, and her true feelings both through dialogue and her own mannerisms. In a role which could easily become a martyr, Elinor becomes a real person we as an audience feel we know.

Close behind Edgar-Jones are her two most frequent scene partners; Esmé Creed-Miles and George MacKay. Creed-Miles believably portrays Marianne’s naivety fuelled by her lovesick nature and treats her outbursts with the sensitivity they require. MacKay proves himself to be the perfect fit for a period-drama leading man, providing a dynamic performance where Edward’s duty to do the noble thing often interferes with what he truly wants in his life.

Although both sisters experience their own romantic arc, Elinor Dashwood and Edward Ferrars were by far the strongest and most compelling couple within the film. MacKay’s and Edgar-Jones’ performances perfectly complimented each other in showing the complexities of a relationship between two people who consider their own happiness of the least importance. Their struggle with this makes their scenes electric to watch and leaves the viewer invested in how their story will end.

Whilst the depiction of these characters and relationships can be compared to other Austen adaptations, what really made the film stand out from its predecessors is what it didn’t say. A usual sole focus on the busy goings on of regency society and interactions between characters is forced to take a pause through still, establishing shots in this version of the story. Moments of quiet are forced upon the audience, whether that be shots of the Dartmoor landscape or bleak empty estates. Audiences are allowed to sit with certain scenes for longer, and absorb the surrounding setting as a vital part of the storytelling experience.

Every carefully thought-out aspect of 2026’s Sense and Sensibility contributes to the film’s core exploration of how class and societal expectation tries to determine one’s happiness. Despite Elinor and Marianne finding themselves in the early 1800s, the emotional performances and lively script allow each character to be right here with us, and only works to prove how timeless this tale will remain. It would be impossible to please every Austen fan, but consider this Austenite thoroughly impressed.

I’m sure all of you have seen the Happy 2016 memes saying that 2026 is the new 2016. This became a new trend to lean into, with everyone taking their own spins on it. But if we really think about it, this wasn’t just a random trend someone started. Everyone went along with it, which means that they all felt the same way. This refers to the fact that there is more to the story. Can it be that we are uncertain about our futures, and looking for comfort in times we see as familiar and safe? And why is it that a similar wave of nostalgia hit everyone during the pandemic?

Just 1 in 4 children and young people enjoy writing in their free time, according to new research from the National Literacy Trust, marking the lowest level recorded since the survey began 15 years ago.

After a long day at school, often the last thing children want to do is more ‘work’ after leaving the classroom. But perhaps that is the issue: writing has become associated with work rather than pleasure. Fewer children are choosing to write in their free time, raising concerns that creativity and self-expression are being overshadowed by the pressures of the classroom and the distractions of the digital world.

The survey conducted in 2025 by the National Literacy Trust, which had 114,970 responses from children and young people aged 5 to 18 in schools across the UK, found just 1 in 10 wrote something daily in their free time. This is the lowest level recorded since the survey began in 2010, with figures almost halving over the past 15 years, highlighting a worrying decline in children’s enthusiasm for writing outside the classroom. This decline was particularly prevalent for primary-aged children, with enjoyment for this age group dropping by 6% over the last year.

However, the report found that children who continue to write in their free time are motivated by creativity and self-expression. Many said writing allows them to use their imagination, express their thoughts and feelings and create stories of their own. Others also described writing as a way to relax and escape everyday life, highlighting as well as academic, there are many benefits.

As the data shows children and young people’s lack of enthusiasm for writing, it is no surprise that the number of them who write daily in their free time has also decreased drastically since 2010.

Speaking to a primary school teacher, she said “it’s been noticeable in the last few years that children rarely seem to choose to write at home, except for when completing set homework. Fewer children write thank you letters to family- using phone calls or messages instead.” With the growth of the digital age, writing is not disappearing completely, but the way we communicate it changing. The teacher added, “text messages, emails and video calls are replacing writing for everyone, including children, which does impact writing progress.”

While young people are arguably writing more than ever through text messages, direct messages on Instagram and replying to social media posts, these forms of communication are very different from creative writing. These digital interactions are quick, require less thought, leaving less opportunity to develop storytelling, vocabulary and longer-form writing skills.

The National Literacy Trust said, “while there is no single solution, it is clear that writing enjoyment must be positioned as a meaningful, personal and empowering part of children and young people’s lives.” The key is changing children and young people’s mindset from seeing writing as work to something they enjoy and voluntarily want to do.

As technology continues to shape the way young people communicate, the challenge for parents and teachers is ensuring that creative writing does not become a forgotten skill.

Volunteer tourism surged in the 1990s, hitting the mass media travel markets in the early 2000’s. This new travel trend promoted travelling with a purpose and giving back whilst abroad. There is a wide range of volunteer programs allowing travellers to pick what suits their skill set, whilst exploring a new destination. From education to environmental work, there are a plethora of opportunities. If you are passionate about wildlife or community development, there is an abundance to choose from. All varying in structure and destination, no two programs are the same.

Here is a full breakdown of the different styles of volunteer tourism, with an insight from young volunteer tourists who have first-hand experience. Exploring what companies to choose, what to know before you go and how to find the right program for you.

Education:

Education is a crucial part of life and society; this fundamental human right is something often taken for granted. Worldwide education volunteer schemes have been established to improve the quality and quantity of education in underdeveloped communities. Typically throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America, where there is a high demand for English teaching but a lack of resources and structure.

These programs typically run from 1 to 12 weeks; the longer that you stay, the bigger your impact will be. Some programs have a minimum stay of 2 weeks to maximise your impact and to ensure an ethical, sustainable outcome. These volunteer schemes are funded by the volunteers, with a registration fee and an overall program fee which typically covers your food and accommodation, in-country transport and 24/7 support whilst volunteering. Some schools and organisations rely on these costs and volunteer participation to keep the programs running and ultimately to continue to improve the quality of education.

Prices vary depending on the country and program; costs can range from £120 to £700 per week. Although this is a wide range, this allows you to find a project that suits your budget. The Mighty Roar offers teaching programmes from £120 to £390, whilst International Volunteer HQ offer programmes from £225 to £684. Challenged Abroad is on the higher end with programmes ranging from £450 per week to £700; the longer you stay, the cheaper it is per week. Challenges Abroad partner with universities, often linked with the turning scheme, making it cheaper for students to volunteer. It is also common that students get a grant to pay for a portion of this volunteering. If you are a student planning to do a volunteer programme, it is wise to look into your university funding to see if there is anything that can cut the costs. Almost all programs don’t include flights; although this act of goodness can be done cheaply, there are definitely lots of added costs.

Sebastian Lane travelled to Panama with Challenges Abroad in 2023 on the education challenge programme. Volunteering in the small town of El Valle de Antón for two weeks, Sebastian taught children English across two primary schools. Both lacking English teachers, the schools rely on these programs to provide volunteers to better the children’s English communication skills. From planning lessons to leading the class and setting activities, Sebastian shared:

“Travelling with Challenges Abroad to Panama and India completely changed my perspective on travel! Volunteering in local schools and helping children with their English was incredibly rewarding, while experiencing different cultures taught me valuable lessons in adaptability and empathy. These trips showed me that travel is about much more than sightseeing, but it’s about building connections, supporting local communities, and growing as a person through meaningful experiences.”

Challenges Abroad is a well-established volunteer organisation for students. Operating programs across ten countries, with a range of programmes. Although specialising in educational volunteering, Challenges Abroad offers medical, wildlife, environmental and social community programs. With the ‘Mission is to develop the next generation of Global Citizens’, they promote impactful travel. Challenges Abroad is partnered with The FutureSense Foundation. The FutureSense Foundation works year-round in the communities to run the programs whilst ensuring a long-term sustainable impact. The charity operates in six hubs and develops a range of programs to address the communities’ needs. Challenges Abroad acts as the backbone; they structure, advertise and arrange these programs for individuals to participate in. When asked about his experience with Challenges Abroad Sebstain shared that:

“The process was smooth and well-organised. They provided clear guidance before departure, support while abroad, and made sure volunteers felt prepared and safe.”

With pre-departure meetings, a support team and extensive information packets to read, Challenges Abroad equip you with everything you need to know pre-departure. Your programme fee includes airport pickup and drop-off once in the country, making your experiences effortless and stress-free. These supportive programmes not only ensure the safety of the community but also the volunteers; when in country, you typically have a challenge leader. This person of authority is there to support your experience, help with any queries and make this experience as smooth as possible.

Educational programmes can differ; although commonly teaching English to children, some programmes offer a range of education from health and wellbeing to women’s health and general education. So choose the program that fits your skill set; these community projects allow you to immerse yourself in a new culture whilst helping these underprivileged communities. When asked what advice he would give to someone considering educational volunteering abroad, Sebastian emphasises:

“Go in with an open mind and a willingness to learn… not just to teach!”

Wildlife:

Over one million species are currently at risk of extinction. In recent years, wildlife has faced a devastating decline, as habitats are destroyed and climate change rises; our planet is at risk of extinction. Primarily driven by human activity, it is our responsibility to undo what has been done.

There is a wide range of wildlife volunteering programmes, but picking the right one is crucial. Unethical programmes cause more harm than good, and are borderline animal tourism rather than conservation work. Companies like The Mighty Roar, GVI, Challenges Abroad, International Volunteer HQ, and Plan my Gap year provide ethical and sustainable programs that positively impact the planet. From restoration to rehabilitation, there is a project for everyone.

Wildlife volunteer programmes range in price from £120 to £1000; although this is a wide range, it again lets participants choose a programme that suits them and their budget. Prices vary depending on the location, the type of conservation and the animals that are involved. Most programmes have a registration fee to cover pre-departure and in-country support. Similar to education volunteering, it is possible as a student to receive a grant or funding to aid you with the costs of this trip; it is always worth checking with your university.

Max Reed travelled to Thailand in 2025 with The Mighty Roar on the Thailand Elephant Volunteer Programme. This programme partners with Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand, working to ‘rescue and rehabilitate captive wild animals and provide high-quality care and a safe environment for them to live for the rest of their lives.’ This foundation relies on volunteers to help run the sanctuaries; as an extra pair of hands, you become a zoo keeper for your time there. When asked about his experience at the sanctuary, Max shared:

“I spent two weeks volunteering at the Elephant sanctuary in Thailand; it was absolutely incredible, backbreaking but incredible. To meet and work and interact with a lot of people from different countries, as well as from my own home country in the UK, and spend so many wonderful moments with them during the day and night was amazing. When you weren’t on duty, you were allowed to mingle and mix and enjoy yourselves with the other volunteers. I am extremely grateful for the friendships created through this trip.”

The wildlife rescue centre has over 600 animals; the elephant sanctuary is home to 20+ asian elephants. Your role as a volunteer involves cleaning enclosures, feeding the animals and creating enrichments for them. Their hands-off approach is what makes this ethical sanctuary more sustainable; by prioritising the animals’ health and wellbeing, volunteers are not causing harm. This is not a tourism scheme, but an organisation that rehabilitates animals. With a vet centre on site, animals receive round-the-clock care; the organisation also offers veterinary volunteers to gain hands-on experience whilst also making an impact. Max shared what it was like volunteering day to day;

“The work was obviously hard, especially with the different weather conditions, preparing the elephants’ morning and afternoon food; you would go out in the trucks to harvest and bring back banana trees, and also cleaning out their enclosures. But it was all worth it every time.”

Within wildlife volunteering is environmental volunteering; some projects singularly focus on climate action and sustainability, focusing on conservation work. This can involve tree planting, river cleaning, environmental restoration and combating plastic pollution. With a similar structure to wildlife volunteering, this project is perfect for those who are passionate about saving the planet, this form of responsible travel is the perfect example of giving back, travelling greener and leaving no trace. Throughout Lauren’s time at the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand, the organisation is always working on bettering the environment. Through composting and waste reduction alongside their rehabilitation, they are preserving the environment.

These volunteer roles can be physically demanding, and volunteers are required to wake up early to stick to animal feeding schedules. This style of volunteering isn’t for the faint-hearted and requires dedication. With each day being different, you will face obstacles and hardship, but seeing the animals thriving is reward enough. Wildlife volunteering can be damaging if not done correctly, and at the core of this work is the animals’ wellbeing, so choosing the correct program is vital. When asked what advice she would give to someone considering wildlife volunteering abroad, Max shared:

“Look forward to an absolutely amazing time, treasure the memories you make as time will fly by fast. The people you meet will be friends for life.”

Medical:

Medical volunteering has strong roots, dating back to at least the 19th century, in response to the Second World War. Before the war, missionary doctors would travel to establish clinics and hospitals; this faith-based approach focused on the creation, not treatments. However, with the creation of the World Health Organisation, medical volunteering picked up. Moving away from missionary work, after the war doctors, surgeons and nurses travelled focusing on reconstruction, vaccination campaigns, public health campaigns and humanitarian responses. Now in the 21st century, medical volunteering is common among students, for placement and work experience to not only widen their skills but to create a positive impact.

There is a wide range of opportunities for medical volunteering, from paramedic placements to clinical volunteering to midwifery, allowing you to pick what suits your skill set. Choosing a reputable company is key; companies like International Volunteer HQ, Work the World and The Mighty Roar all offer a range of programs and have received high praise for their success and sustainable structure.

Like all volunteer programs, medical opportunities vary in cost ranging from £160 to £1890 per week, depending on the programme, destination and the medical involvement. Most programmes also require a registration fee which goes towards providing you pre departure support; this cost will vary depending on the organisation. Typically, your programme fee includes your accommodation, meals and in-country transport as well as 24/7 support whilst on the programme. These programs are great for creating a positive impact whilst learning and gaining experience. Libby McFarlane travelled to South Africa with The Mighty Roar on their medical experience programme. For 4 weeks, Libby helped at a local clinic in the heart of Cape Town. This busy, overcrowded clinic offered a range of free treatments to those in need. This programme is designed for students to further their experience in the medical field whilst making a difference. This programme is only for students who are studying a relevant subject and are looking for overseas elective placements. This hands-on learning not only benefited the volunteers but the doctors and nurses at the clinic, through the exchange of medical knowledge and experience. When asked about how she felt she created an impact, Libby reflected on her experience and shared:

“I created an impact by assisting and teaching the local staff how certain procedures are carried out in the UK, a basic one being cleanliness before tasks. I often encouraged staff to ensure they have washed hands, worn gloves etc as they were unaware of the dangers of infection, whereas nursing in the UK, infection is a huge part of our roles. I created great bonds with the staff, and we were all able to teach one another many things!”

Throughout the program, volunteers aid the clinic in a variety of ways, from monitoring patients, helping doctors with “ECG, drips, getting vital signs, weighing babies”. Volunteers are immersed in the local healthcare environment. Working in a range of departments from chronic health to emergency and wound clinics, volunteers lend an extra pair of hands to those in need. Although the role is largely observational, being there for the patients and aiding in any way made an impact. All medical activities carried out were under the supervision of a medical professional on site. With 24/7 support from The Mighty Roar, this structured program is great for those wanting to travel with purpose whilst creating an impact. When asked what advice she would give to someone considering Medical volunteering abroad, Libby shared:

“Do it!!! I was in so much doubt and fear leading up to my trip, questioning if it was the right thing to do! And it was the best experience of my life! I made friends for life and lived so many bucket list moments! So definitely do it!! Don’t be scared”

Deciding what style of volunteering you want to do is your first step, then researching and finding an ethical and trusted company. During your pre-departure prep, there will be lots of added costs, suitable clothing, visas, vaccinations and your flights. Although these add up and it can become expensive to travel to make an impact, you are giving back.

Although you are only one set of hands, your impact can be as small or as big as you want it to be. The extra set of hands you lend makes daily operations run smoother, improves the quality of health and education, and if enough people are inspired to do it then the impact will be even greater. During my time volunteering abroad, I set up fundraising pages to raise money for the organisation, raising over £1,000 for challenges abroad. I was able to contribute to the creation of one of their new school buildings. Dream big and start small, but make sure to go into this with the right intentions. This isn’t a holiday but a chance to help make a difference.

Morocco is known for its rich culture, vibrant Medinas, the Sahara’s desert dunes, and the dramatic scenery of the Atlas Mountains. Escaping from the country’s capital, Marrakech and moving away from the typical tourist hotspots, you enter the untamed landscapes of Morocco.

Located in the heart of the Atlas Mountains, around two hours south of Marrakech, is Toubkal National Park. Situated in the Village of Imlil, this national park offers you a mountainous escape from the bustling city. Imlil is easy to reach from Marrakech; the winding scenic roads unfold into exquisite views of other mountain villages. As you pass through villages, you get a glimpse of Berber culture. The pink and terracotta houses cling to the mountain and are clustered together, surrounded by blossom and fruit trees. As you get closer to Imlil, your views go from terracotta to green as the Atlas Mountains take shape.

The local Berber people live in harmony within the mountain range, known as the free people. This welcoming community is known for its vibrant culture, delicious cuisine, and welcoming hospitality. Imlil is made up of restaurants and guesthouses, run by locals. This authentic experience gives you an insight into their raw culture.

Isolated from the outside world, Imlil is the perfect place to immerse yourself. As nature and culture collide, you will have a diverse experience. With an insight into local rural life, you truly feel disconnected from the mundane. Waking up to a beautiful sunrise over the crisp mountain air, as beams of sun stream down onto the alpine slopes. Make sure you stay somewhere with a balcony to admire this heavenly view; the terracotta homes with flat roofs blend into the surrounding landscape.

There are a plethora of traditional guest houses to stay in to uncover the culture that revolves around its surrounding landscape; these homestay experiences offer far more than a hotel. Although the accommodation is basic, the warmth and welcoming nature of the locals are unmatched, and the traditional food they serve you is delicious, leaving you wanting more. Full of spices and flavour, the national dish Tagine is a combination of meats and vegetables stewed together in traditional terracotta pots. This dish is deeply rooted in Berber culture and is served with crusty Berber bread and couscous.

Although a small town, Imlil is brimming with activities, all revolving around its beautiful landscapes. With a plethora of treks and hikes to go on, you will never get bored. From plunge pools to waterfalls to rushing streams, these nature walks truly capture the surrounding region. The rich green scenery is enough in itself to keep you busy; the surrounding villages are brimming with market stalls with fresh food and handcrafted traditional Moroccan souvenirs. Imlil relies on tourists, which increases employment and incomes; it is a vital part of their economy. The surrounding valleys are rich in agriculture, harvesting walnuts, cherries, apples and various other fruits and nuts, which further contribute to the economy. Though the community is still sustained by the steady flow of travellers, specifically mountain tourism, from guides, to transport, to accommodation, this small town revolves around this incredible mountain range.

Vatsalya travelled to Morocco in August of 2025 on a group expedition with Intrepid. During her time, she adventured in the Atlas Mountains, immersing in their culture and exploring the surrounding natural landscapes. Going off the beaten path, the group stayed in a local mountain gite in the town of Aroumd. Aroumd is a traditional Berber village neighbouring Imlil and overlooking the incredible mountain range. Living alongside the locals, Vatsalaya shared that;

“Being in the mountains felt like stepping outside the world I knew. Surrounded by nature, practising morning yoga while listening to the river, I felt my body and mind finally slow down and reset. The balance of warm days and crisp nights created a sense of comfort I hadn’t felt in a long time. What stayed with me most were the people — welcoming, present, and truly passionate about living, something city life often makes us forget. The experience reminded me that the essence of life lies in connection, presence, celebrating life, and allowing ourselves the freedom to simply be.”

The adventure takes 2-3 days. Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, offers panoramic views of the contrasting snowcapped mountains and the Sahara Desert. At 4,167 meters, this hike is more appealing to tourists than other big summits, as it is feasible with determination, good health and fitness, as no mountaineering skills or gear are needed. When hiking, whether it’s to the summit or a day hike, you are legally required to have a guide. This was introduced in 2018 after a fatal incident near Mount Toubkal, involving two tourists. This law was implemented to protect tourists and allow them to hike safely. Do not embark on this journey alone; a guide must accompany you. A guide not only makes your hike safer - with insider knowledge of the weather, the most efficient routes, and the region’s history and culture - but also far more enjoyable. Offering you local insight, a guide will transform this into a meaningful and educational trip whilst keeping you safe. It is required that you bring your passport when entering the national park, so guards can record your details and ensure your guide is licensed for your own safety. If climbing to the summit, there are three checkpoints; on day-trip hikes, you will only encounter the entrance checkpoint.

Spanning 380 Km2, Morocco’s first national park invites travellers to explore its towering peaks, natural springs and its lush valleys. The best time to visit the national park is either April to May, or September to October. During the Autumn, the weather is the most stable, allowing the easiest climb whilst avoiding the unbearable beaming summer heat and the chilling winter conditions. Throughout spring, nature is at its peak, with flowers in full bloom, making this idyllic hike even more enchanting as the landscapes around you flourish. It is recommended to hike in the autumn months due to the most stable conditions, with dry, steady terrain. It is ideal if you wish to reach the summit.

Going on a one-day hike is common, as not everyone is built to reach the summit. There are a plethora of hikes that offer amazing views with a fraction of the time and effort. Going early in the morning is recommended to avoid the blistering sun, allowing you to enjoy a cooler climate on your hike. Starting in Aroumd, you get a breathtaking view of the towering mountainsides brimming with clay-toned houses. Passing Aroumd, you enter the Imlil Valley, walking alongside the small stream, you start your hike up to the national park entrance. After a steep rocky incline, you reach the park entrance. Although there is no official entrance fee, it is mandatory to have an accompanying guide; the cost will vary based on your guide. Ranging from £30 to £40 per day, you get your money’s worth. After having your passport checked, you are free to adventure through the Atlas Mountains.

As you continue to climb, you will be passed by mules, donkeys and locals that are making their way to smaller Berber villages located on mountains. The terrain is sparse and varied, with lush green patches contrasting with dry, crumbling boulders clinging to the mountainside. The higher you climb, the better the views. At the deepest part of the valley, a stream flows. As the snowcaps melt, the water flows down the slopes and down the mountain. With plunge pools and waterfalls in various areas of the mountain range, these hidden gems are heavenly. Continuing to climb, you pass wild sheep perched on the grassy slopes. These simple views are spectacular, offering a raw, untouched view of the earth.

A common place to stop is Chaharouch Springs. This waterfall is located in Sidi Chamharouch, a village known as a pilgrimage site for healing. This is a key rest stop on a hike. With a limited number of restaurants and cafes around the springs, it is recommended to bring a packed lunch, as food is not guaranteed along the route. Cool off in the stream and take a refreshing dip in the springs’ plunge pool. Although cold, you will dry off in the warmth of the Moroccan sun.

This six-hour moderate hike offers you a taste of the Atlas Mountains. The untouched beauty of Toubkal National Park is idyllic; this surreal, authentic experience is unforgettable. At 2330 meters, you are presented with breathtaking views; surrounded by nature, your senses come alive. The chirping birds fill your ears as they circle the mountains, and the beaming sun kisses your skin as you start your trek down. This is the perfect way to spend your day in Morocco and an adventure you will never forget.

Whilst the sun is at its peak, take a nap to recharge after your long hike. Do some yoga outside and reconnect with nature. This peaceful valley is the perfect place to unwind. Sitting outside and appreciating the view feels like an attraction within itself. As time passes and the sun sets, the rugged peaks are illuminated. Golden hues flood the sky as it transforms into a natural work of art, like something out of a painting; this scenery, this unforgettable ending to the day, is picture-perfect.

These dramatic landscapes leave you feeling calm and connected to nature. Disconnected from the outside world, you can fully immerse yourself in Imlil. Their natural beauty shines over tourist hotspots and makes you appreciate the quiet stillness of the Atlas Mountains. As you settle into the local rhythm of Imlil, you are culturally immersed in the Berber villages and their simple mountain life. Although you came for the scenery, it’s the warmth and hospitality of the locals that make you want to stay. This authentic experience is unforgettable and truly touches the soul. As you return to the city chaos, the peace of the mountains lingers as a distant memory.

Your 20s are often seen as the time for independence, travelling the world, moving cities and ultimately living a spontaneous lifestyle – milestones that don’t usually align with the responsibilities of first-time pet ownership. But, Cats Protection has revealed in their 2025 CATS (Cats and Their Stats UK) Report that young people are more likely than ever to own a cat.

For a long time now, cats have been the second-most popular pet in the UK, following behind dogs which roughly 30% of the UK own pdsa.

Cats Protection have stated that there were 10.2 million UK households owned cats UK in 2025, making up 24% of the population.

The distribution of cat ownership across the English regions is largely consistent, however, there are notably more owners in London, with 28% of households owning a cat. Whilst on the other end of the spectrum, only 17% in North East England.

However, one of the most significant changes in cat ownership noted by Cats Protection is the increase in 18-34 year olds obtaining a cat in the last five years. 31% now own a cat, a figure that has risen 6% since 2020. Interestingly, there has also been a decrease in the percentage of 35 – 54 year olds owning a cat, whilst 55+ year olds have remained consistently low in their ownership.

So, why are young people choosing to take on the commitment of purchasing a cat, whilst data shows that other age groups are choosing to not.

In the CATS report, digital engagement manager Vicki Greenfield, suggested that social media has been pivotal:

“the digital world is increasingly playing a central role in educating, advising and influencing people of all ages.”

This doesn’t come as a shock with social media filled with cat content. In fact, the #cat hashtag on Instagram has gathered a whopping 313M posts, whilst TikTok has also gained over 75.6M #cat posts. Many of these posts advertise cats as being the perfect pet and provide a wealth of ownership tips, alongside the classic funny cat fail video which have been popular since social media established.

We already know that young people are highly influenced by social media and clearly the posts fed to them are encouraging the ownership of cats.

The CATS report also stated that young owners are using social media as their main source of knowledge. Data showed that 47% of 18-34 year olds are turning to YouTube 40% are turning to TikTok for advice on how to take care of their cat.

In light of this, the report has raised concerns that social media has resulted in young owners contacting their vet for advice less often. This can have a detrimental effect on the welfare of cats in the UK, as owners may be influenced by online recommendations that aren’t actually beneficial.

Cats Protection, however, is using their social media channels for good. They have recognised the influence of online posts on young cat owners and hopes to create educational content that reaches a large audience and “improve cat welfare at a huge scale” Cats Protection.

In a world where AI is taking over, the way that news is consumed is also rapidly changing. With the convenience of AI, audiences can now ask questions about news stories, which would have required more time and research before the time of chatbots. However, where does trust come into the conversation?

The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism is a research institute, committed to add to the conversations regarding the future of journalism. According to their 2026 Digital News Report, the usage of AI for the purpose of news has grown from 7% to 10% compared to last year, and this percentage is taken up mostly by younger audiences. With the inclusion of AI, social media and video networks now take up 56% of the news consumption habits of the public. So what does this mean for the future of news?

First, it is important to look at the age range within which AI is consumed most for the purpose of news. The highest percentage of usage comes from young adults between 18-34, taking up 32%. The percentages are significantly lower for adult audiences, with 19% for 35-54 year olds, and only 5% for 55+. It is also crucial to note that most of these percentages include ‘news lovers’, so their usage is higher due to their curiosity towards news, with 19% representing those who are very interested in news, and 7% those who are not.

Besides AI, social media is leading the way within news consumption, but the result of this is that the need for traditional media is becoming increasingly lower. An interesting parallel can be drawn, as even though audiences consume more news on social media and through AI chatbots, they are also afraid of unreliable sources and fake news. As we live in a fast paced world where people want quick and specific answers, AI can act as a useful tool to get information. However, AI is still not 100% accurate, which is why it is important not to completely rely on it, and to gain information from other sources as well.

Trust is one of the most important subject matters that needs to be discussed within this topic. Another one is convenience. Interestingly, people are afraid of fake news and believe that social media and AI can be viewed as unreliable, however these have become the most convenient and quickest ways to access news, which is why they are at the top of audience’s lists.

What is a compelling addition to this is that those who are regular users of AI are also more likely to get their news stories there as well. Overall, 20% of the population trusts AI for news, but when looking at those who frequently use AI chatbots, 44% of them said that they would trust AI to access news as well. On the other hand, within the 17% who don’t use AI, they expressed that they would not trust AI for news.

It is also important to establish in what capacity audiences are using AI to learn more about news. 42% of people use AI because if they ask follow-up questions about a news story, they will be presented with more information, and 39% because they consider AI to be the quickest source of news. Other responses got similarly high percentages, with 36% for those who choose AI because it ‘summarises complicated stories’ and 35% for those who prefer AI because it can provide an answer to any given question, and can gather articles from other publications and make it ‘into a single response’.

So, are we talking about trust, or convenience? And what is the price that has to be paid for convenience?

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology highlights the dangers of excessive dependency on AI, as their Media Lab Study has found that ‘participants who relied on AI systems to verify facts actually got worse at detecting misinformation on their own when chatbots were taken away’.

During this research, participants had the option to test how well they can detect fake news with and without the help of AI. The success rate was high with the help of AI chatbots, as participants were 21% more likely to detect fake news, however, when it came to their ability through independent identification, the percentage dropped by 15%. As a result, participants in this study ‘gradually shifted from active self-reliance to passive acceptance of AI guidance’.

As people will rely more and more on AI, their skills to do research on their own and their ability to spot fake news will get harder as time passes. Audiences need to learn how to use AI efficiently without falling into the trap of chatbots doing all the research for them, relying solely on information they provide. To protect unbiased and trustworthy journalism in the future, even if audiences are using AI for news consumption, it is crucial for them to click-through to published news articles, and to use AI in moderation.

With cheap plane tickets and a flurry of social media attention, more Britons are attempting the ‘extreme day trip’. But, what actually is this new travel trend and is it really a viable way of seeing the world.

It certainly isn’t for everyone. However, for those who perhaps have limited annual leave, can’t afford a week abroad, or simply love to sleep in their own bed, the extreme day trip could be ideal.

The concept is easy. You book the first flight out, taking off before sunrise and land in your location just as the shops and attractions begin to open. From here, it’s a race against the clock to fit in as much sightseeing and activities as possible, before flying home late at night. No expensive hotel needed. Sounds like an adventure, right?

This new way of travelling has certainly taken off, no pun intended. In fact, experts at Confused.com suggest that as many as 3 in 10 Brits (30%) have already been on an extreme day trip, and a further 13% have been on multiple.

Many of these individuals have taken to social media to promote this, posting snaps and videos of glorious beaches, attractive food spots and iconic landmarks, all in one day. But are these social media depictions simply too good to be true?

The members of the ‘extreme day trip’ online groups don’t think so. 24hr travellers and those interested in the trend have formed various communities, particularly on Facebook. One of the largest groups boasts over 354k members, while others are centered around UK departure airports. These groups act as a hub for these daring travellers, providing them with a space to share photos and details of their day trips, offer itineraries, reveal top tips, and post about new flight deals. From joining these groups and connecting with some of the members, it’s fascinating to learn more about the passion and creativity involved in curating the perfect 24 hours abroad.

One member from the ‘Extreme day trips from Bristol Aiport’ group shared their exciting day trip to Monaco, in which they boarded a 7:20am flight to Nice and then got straight on the number 80 bus that took them into the heart of Monte Carlo. Upon arriving they spent the day walking the F1 track, car spotting, visiting casinos and walking around the marina and palace, before arriving back at Nice airport by 7:45pm.

It was interesting to read about this itinerary as I myself recently visited Monte Carlo for the day whilst on a trip in the South of France and recognised how qualities like the walkability and the number of activities made it a good day out.

But what actually motivates these travellers to spend a single day abroad rather than several days or even a week.

I spoke to Rick, creator of extremedaytrips.com, which is a site designed to make the process of booking extreme day trips easier, allowing for users to:

“search several weeks at once and use filters that are specifically useful for day trips”

“People can also save searches, set price alerts, view ready-made itineraries and then book directly with the airline.”

“The main aim is to take away a lot of the repetitive searching and make it easier to find trips that are genuinely achievable in one day.”

When asked about why there has been a rise in this travel trend, he explained that he thinks:

“people have less spare time and less disposable income than they used to, but they still want to travel and have new experiences.”

“An Extreme Day Trip might only require one day off work, or no time off at all if you travel at the weekend.”

“You also avoid the cost of a hotel, and the flights can be very cheap because you are often using less popular services early in the morning and late at night.”

“It allows people to see more places and make their travel budget go further.”

“There is also something nice about regularly having a trip to look forward to. Instead of having one big holiday and then waiting several months for the next one, you could have a different city or experience planned every month or two.”

Cost is clearly a defining motivator for extreme day trippers. According to Luton Airport’s 2024 travel trends report, around 39% of ‘holi-day’ travellers stated that eliminating accommodation costs was one of their main reasons for booking day trips. This doesn’t come as a surprise with hotel and Airbnb stays remaining increasingly expensive, with European accommodation costing an average of €150 - €250 per night.

I also spoke to Dan, an avid extreme day tripper, who believes it is the perfect option for fulfilling his love of travelling whilst not breaking the bank. He has visited Amsterdam, Faro, Malaga, Basel, Ibiza and most recently Prague as day trips. He took the time to discuss his recent trip to Prague:

“A few weeks ago a friend and I wanted to take a day trip to another city in England, but after looking at train prices we realised, as always, that it would be cheaper for us to go and visit a European city for the day.”

“With that in mind, we spent a few days searching for the cheapest and most viable flights on Skyscanner.”

“We considered Prague, Tirana and Rome, but ended up deciding on Prague as it was marginally cheaper than the others at £60. The flight to Tirana was also slightly longer so we would have had less time in the city and Stanstead was the departure airport for the other flights, which was more difficult and expensive to get to than Luton Airport due to the cost of trains.”

“We boarded onto a National Express coach which cost £30 for a return ticket, which ironically is half the price of the plane ticket, despite it only being a 66 mile journey, whilst Prague is 855 miles away!”

“We also laughed at the fact that this was the cheapest option to get to the airport, with the train costing £55 – practically the same cost as the flight!”

“We arrived into Prague at 9am local time, giving us 12 hours before our 9pm flight back home.”
