I’m sure all of you have seen the Happy 2016 memes saying that 2026 is the new 2016. This became a new trend to lean into, with everyone taking their own spins on it. But if we really think about it, this wasn’t just a random trend someone started. Everyone went along with it, which means that they all felt the same way. This refers to the fact that there is more to the story. Can it be that we are uncertain about our futures, and looking for comfort in times we see as familiar and safe? And why is it that a similar wave of nostalgia hit everyone during the pandemic?

Just 1 in 4 children and young people enjoy writing in their free time, according to new research from the National Literacy Trust, marking the lowest level recorded since the survey began 15 years ago.

After a long day at school, often the last thing children want to do is more ‘work’ after leaving the classroom. But perhaps that is the issue: writing has become associated with work rather than pleasure. Fewer children are choosing to write in their free time, raising concerns that creativity and self-expression are being overshadowed by the pressures of the classroom and the distractions of the digital world.

The survey conducted in 2025 by the National Literacy Trust, which had 114,970 responses from children and young people aged 5 to 18 in schools across the UK, found just 1 in 10 wrote something daily in their free time. This is the lowest level recorded since the survey began in 2010, with figures almost halving over the past 15 years, highlighting a worrying decline in children’s enthusiasm for writing outside the classroom. This decline was particularly prevalent for primary-aged children, with enjoyment for this age group dropping by 6% over the last year.

However, the report found that children who continue to write in their free time are motivated by creativity and self-expression. Many said writing allows them to use their imagination, express their thoughts and feelings and create stories of their own. Others also described writing as a way to relax and escape everyday life, highlighting as well as academic, there are many benefits.

As the data shows children and young people’s lack of enthusiasm for writing, it is no surprise that the number of them who write daily in their free time has also decreased drastically since 2010.

Speaking to a primary school teacher, she said “it’s been noticeable in the last few years that children rarely seem to choose to write at home, except for when completing set homework. Fewer children write thank you letters to family- using phone calls or messages instead.” With the growth of the digital age, writing is not disappearing completely, but the way we communicate it changing. The teacher added, “text messages, emails and video calls are replacing writing for everyone, including children, which does impact writing progress.”

While young people are arguably writing more than ever through text messages, direct messages on Instagram and replying to social media posts, these forms of communication are very different from creative writing. These digital interactions are quick, require less thought, leaving less opportunity to develop storytelling, vocabulary and longer-form writing skills.

The National Literacy Trust said, “while there is no single solution, it is clear that writing enjoyment must be positioned as a meaningful, personal and empowering part of children and young people’s lives.” The key is changing children and young people’s mindset from seeing writing as work to something they enjoy and voluntarily want to do.

As technology continues to shape the way young people communicate, the challenge for parents and teachers is ensuring that creative writing does not become a forgotten skill.

Volunteer tourism surged in the 1990s, hitting the mass media travel markets in the early 2000’s. This new travel trend promoted travelling with a purpose and giving back whilst abroad. There is a wide range of volunteer programs allowing travellers to pick what suits their skill set, whilst exploring a new destination. From education to environmental work, there are a plethora of opportunities. If you are passionate about wildlife or community development, there is an abundance to choose from. All varying in structure and destination, no two programs are the same.

Here is a full breakdown of the different styles of volunteer tourism, with an insight from young volunteer tourists who have first-hand experience. Exploring what companies to choose, what to know before you go and how to find the right program for you.

Education:

Education is a crucial part of life and society; this fundamental human right is something often taken for granted. Worldwide education volunteer schemes have been established to improve the quality and quantity of education in underdeveloped communities. Typically throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America, where there is a high demand for English teaching but a lack of resources and structure.

These programs typically run from 1 to 12 weeks; the longer that you stay, the bigger your impact will be. Some programs have a minimum stay of 2 weeks to maximise your impact and to ensure an ethical, sustainable outcome. These volunteer schemes are funded by the volunteers, with a registration fee and an overall program fee which typically covers your food and accommodation, in-country transport and 24/7 support whilst volunteering. Some schools and organisations rely on these costs and volunteer participation to keep the programs running and ultimately to continue to improve the quality of education.

Prices vary depending on the country and program; costs can range from £120 to £700 per week. Although this is a wide range, this allows you to find a project that suits your budget. The Mighty Roar offers teaching programmes from £120 to £390, whilst International Volunteer HQ offer programmes from £225 to £684. Challenged Abroad is on the higher end with programmes ranging from £450 per week to £700; the longer you stay, the cheaper it is per week. Challenges Abroad partner with universities, often linked with the turning scheme, making it cheaper for students to volunteer. It is also common that students get a grant to pay for a portion of this volunteering. If you are a student planning to do a volunteer programme, it is wise to look into your university funding to see if there is anything that can cut the costs. Almost all programs don’t include flights; although this act of goodness can be done cheaply, there are definitely lots of added costs.

Sebastian Lane travelled to Panama with Challenges Abroad in 2023 on the education challenge programme. Volunteering in the small town of El Valle de Antón for two weeks, Sebastian taught children English across two primary schools. Both lacking English teachers, the schools rely on these programs to provide volunteers to better the children’s English communication skills. From planning lessons to leading the class and setting activities, Sebastian shared:

“Travelling with Challenges Abroad to Panama and India completely changed my perspective on travel! Volunteering in local schools and helping children with their English was incredibly rewarding, while experiencing different cultures taught me valuable lessons in adaptability and empathy. These trips showed me that travel is about much more than sightseeing, but it’s about building connections, supporting local communities, and growing as a person through meaningful experiences.”

Challenges Abroad is a well-established volunteer organisation for students. Operating programs across ten countries, with a range of programmes. Although specialising in educational volunteering, Challenges Abroad offers medical, wildlife, environmental and social community programs. With the ‘Mission is to develop the next generation of Global Citizens’, they promote impactful travel. Challenges Abroad is partnered with The FutureSense Foundation. The FutureSense Foundation works year-round in the communities to run the programs whilst ensuring a long-term sustainable impact. The charity operates in six hubs and develops a range of programs to address the communities’ needs. Challenges Abroad acts as the backbone; they structure, advertise and arrange these programs for individuals to participate in. When asked about his experience with Challenges Abroad Sebstain shared that:

“The process was smooth and well-organised. They provided clear guidance before departure, support while abroad, and made sure volunteers felt prepared and safe.”

With pre-departure meetings, a support team and extensive information packets to read, Challenges Abroad equip you with everything you need to know pre-departure. Your programme fee includes airport pickup and drop-off once in the country, making your experiences effortless and stress-free. These supportive programmes not only ensure the safety of the community but also the volunteers; when in country, you typically have a challenge leader. This person of authority is there to support your experience, help with any queries and make this experience as smooth as possible.

Educational programmes can differ; although commonly teaching English to children, some programmes offer a range of education from health and wellbeing to women’s health and general education. So choose the program that fits your skill set; these community projects allow you to immerse yourself in a new culture whilst helping these underprivileged communities. When asked what advice he would give to someone considering educational volunteering abroad, Sebastian emphasises:

“Go in with an open mind and a willingness to learn… not just to teach!”

Wildlife:

Over one million species are currently at risk of extinction. In recent years, wildlife has faced a devastating decline, as habitats are destroyed and climate change rises; our planet is at risk of extinction. Primarily driven by human activity, it is our responsibility to undo what has been done.

There is a wide range of wildlife volunteering programmes, but picking the right one is crucial. Unethical programmes cause more harm than good, and are borderline animal tourism rather than conservation work. Companies like The Mighty Roar, GVI, Challenges Abroad, International Volunteer HQ, and Plan my Gap year provide ethical and sustainable programs that positively impact the planet. From restoration to rehabilitation, there is a project for everyone.

Wildlife volunteer programmes range in price from £120 to £1000; although this is a wide range, it again lets participants choose a programme that suits them and their budget. Prices vary depending on the location, the type of conservation and the animals that are involved. Most programmes have a registration fee to cover pre-departure and in-country support. Similar to education volunteering, it is possible as a student to receive a grant or funding to aid you with the costs of this trip; it is always worth checking with your university.

Max Reed travelled to Thailand in 2025 with The Mighty Roar on the Thailand Elephant Volunteer Programme. This programme partners with Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand, working to ‘rescue and rehabilitate captive wild animals and provide high-quality care and a safe environment for them to live for the rest of their lives.’ This foundation relies on volunteers to help run the sanctuaries; as an extra pair of hands, you become a zoo keeper for your time there. When asked about his experience at the sanctuary, Max shared:

“I spent two weeks volunteering at the Elephant sanctuary in Thailand; it was absolutely incredible, backbreaking but incredible. To meet and work and interact with a lot of people from different countries, as well as from my own home country in the UK, and spend so many wonderful moments with them during the day and night was amazing. When you weren’t on duty, you were allowed to mingle and mix and enjoy yourselves with the other volunteers. I am extremely grateful for the friendships created through this trip.”

The wildlife rescue centre has over 600 animals; the elephant sanctuary is home to 20+ asian elephants. Your role as a volunteer involves cleaning enclosures, feeding the animals and creating enrichments for them. Their hands-off approach is what makes this ethical sanctuary more sustainable; by prioritising the animals’ health and wellbeing, volunteers are not causing harm. This is not a tourism scheme, but an organisation that rehabilitates animals. With a vet centre on site, animals receive round-the-clock care; the organisation also offers veterinary volunteers to gain hands-on experience whilst also making an impact. Max shared what it was like volunteering day to day;

“The work was obviously hard, especially with the different weather conditions, preparing the elephants’ morning and afternoon food; you would go out in the trucks to harvest and bring back banana trees, and also cleaning out their enclosures. But it was all worth it every time.”

Within wildlife volunteering is environmental volunteering; some projects singularly focus on climate action and sustainability, focusing on conservation work. This can involve tree planting, river cleaning, environmental restoration and combating plastic pollution. With a similar structure to wildlife volunteering, this project is perfect for those who are passionate about saving the planet, this form of responsible travel is the perfect example of giving back, travelling greener and leaving no trace. Throughout Lauren’s time at the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand, the organisation is always working on bettering the environment. Through composting and waste reduction alongside their rehabilitation, they are preserving the environment.

These volunteer roles can be physically demanding, and volunteers are required to wake up early to stick to animal feeding schedules. This style of volunteering isn’t for the faint-hearted and requires dedication. With each day being different, you will face obstacles and hardship, but seeing the animals thriving is reward enough. Wildlife volunteering can be damaging if not done correctly, and at the core of this work is the animals’ wellbeing, so choosing the correct program is vital. When asked what advice she would give to someone considering wildlife volunteering abroad, Max shared:

“Look forward to an absolutely amazing time, treasure the memories you make as time will fly by fast. The people you meet will be friends for life.”

Medical:

Medical volunteering has strong roots, dating back to at least the 19th century, in response to the Second World War. Before the war, missionary doctors would travel to establish clinics and hospitals; this faith-based approach focused on the creation, not treatments. However, with the creation of the World Health Organisation, medical volunteering picked up. Moving away from missionary work, after the war doctors, surgeons and nurses travelled focusing on reconstruction, vaccination campaigns, public health campaigns and humanitarian responses. Now in the 21st century, medical volunteering is common among students, for placement and work experience to not only widen their skills but to create a positive impact.

There is a wide range of opportunities for medical volunteering, from paramedic placements to clinical volunteering to midwifery, allowing you to pick what suits your skill set. Choosing a reputable company is key; companies like International Volunteer HQ, Work the World and The Mighty Roar all offer a range of programs and have received high praise for their success and sustainable structure.

Like all volunteer programs, medical opportunities vary in cost ranging from £160 to £1890 per week, depending on the programme, destination and the medical involvement. Libby McFarlane travelled to South Africa with The Mighty Roar on their medical experience programme. For 4 weeks, Libby helped at a local clinic in the heart of Cape Town. This busy, overcrowded clinic offered a range of free treatments to those in need. This programme is designed for students to further their experience in the medical field whilst making a difference. This programme is only for students who are studying a relevant subject and are looking for overseas elective placements. This hands-on learning not only benefited the volunteers but the doctors and nurses at the clinic, through the exchange of medical knowledge and experience. When asked about how she felt she created an impact, Libby reflected on her experience and shared:

“I created an impact by assisting and teaching the local staff how certain procedures are carried out in the UK, a basic one being cleanliness before tasks. I often encouraged staff to ensure they have washed hands, worn gloves etc as they were unaware of the dangers of infection, whereas nursing in the UK, infection is a huge part of our roles. I created great bonds with the staff, and we were all able to teach one another many things!”

Throughout the program, volunteers aid the clinic in a variety of ways, from monitoring patients, helping doctors with “ECG, drips, getting vital signs, weighing babies”. Volunteers are immersed in the local healthcare environment. Working in a range of departments from chronic health to emergency and wound clinics, volunteers lend an extra pair of hands to those in need. Although the role is largely observational, being there for the patients and aiding in any way made an impact. All medical activities carried out were under the supervision of a medical professional on site. With 24/7 support from The Mighty Roar, this structured program is great for those wanting to travel with purpose whilst creating an impact. When asked what advice she would give to someone considering Medical volunteering abroad, Libby shared:

“Do it!!! I was in so much doubt and fear leading up to my trip, questioning if it was the right thing to do! And it was the best experience of my life! I made friends for life and lived so many bucket list moments! So definitely do it!! Don’t be scared”

Deciding what style of volunteering you want to do is your first step, then researching and finding an ethical and trusted company. During your pre-departure prep, there will be lots of added costs, suitable clothing, visas, vaccinations and your flights. Although these add up and it can become expensive to travel to make an impact, you are giving back.

Although you are only one set of hands, your impact can be as small or as big as you want it to be. The extra set of hands you lend makes daily operations run smoother, improves the quality of health and education, and if enough people are inspired to do it then the impact will be even greater. During my time volunteering abroad, I set up fundraising pages to raise money for the organisation, raising over £1,000 for challenges abroad. I was able to contribute to the creation of one of their new school buildings. Dream big and start small, but make sure to go into this with the right intentions. This isn’t a holiday but a chance to help make a difference.

Morocco is known for its rich culture, vibrant Medinas, the Sahara’s desert dunes, and the dramatic scenery of the Atlas Mountains. Escaping from the country’s capital, Marrakech and moving away from the typical tourist hotspots, you enter the untamed landscapes of Morocco.

Located in the heart of the Atlas Mountains, around two hours south of Marrakech, is Toubkal National Park. Situated in the Village of Imlil, this national park offers you a mountainous escape from the bustling city. Imlil is easy to reach from Marrakech; the winding scenic roads unfold into exquisite views of other mountain villages. As you pass through villages, you get a glimpse of Berber culture. The pink and terracotta houses cling to the mountain and are clustered together, surrounded by blossom and fruit trees. As you get closer to Imlil, your views go from terracotta to green as the Atlas Mountains take shape.

The local Berber people live in harmony within the mountain range, known as the free people. This welcoming community is known for its vibrant culture, delicious cuisine, and welcoming hospitality. Imlil is made up of restaurants and guesthouses, run by locals. This authentic experience gives you an insight into their raw culture.

Isolated from the outside world, Imlil is the perfect place to immerse yourself. As nature and culture collide, you will have a diverse experience. With an insight into local rural life, you truly feel disconnected from the mundane. Waking up to a beautiful sunrise over the crisp mountain air, as beams of sun stream down onto the alpine slopes. Make sure you stay somewhere with a balcony to admire this heavenly view; the terracotta homes with flat roofs blend into the surrounding landscape.

There are a plethora of traditional guest houses to stay in to uncover the culture that revolves around its surrounding landscape; these homestay experiences offer far more than a hotel. Although the accommodation is basic, the warmth and welcoming nature of the locals are unmatched, and the traditional food they serve you is delicious, leaving you wanting more. Full of spices and flavour, the national dish Tagine is a combination of meats and vegetables stewed together in traditional terracotta pots. This dish is deeply rooted in Berber culture and is served with crusty Berber bread and couscous.

Although a small town, Imlil is brimming with activities, all revolving around its beautiful landscapes. With a plethora of treks and hikes to go on, you will never get bored. From plunge pools to waterfalls to rushing streams, these nature walks truly capture the surrounding region. The rich green scenery is enough in itself to keep you busy; the surrounding villages are brimming with market stalls with fresh food and handcrafted traditional Moroccan souvenirs. Imlil relies on tourists, which increases employment and incomes; it is a vital part of their economy. The surrounding valleys are rich in agriculture, harvesting walnuts, cherries, apples and various other fruits and nuts, which further contribute to the economy. Though the community is still sustained by the steady flow of travellers, specifically mountain tourism, from guides, to transport, to accommodation, this small town revolves around this incredible mountain range.

Vatsalya travelled to Morocco in August of 2025 on a group expedition with Intrepid. During her time, she adventured in the Atlas Mountains, immersing in their culture and exploring the surrounding natural landscapes. Going off the beaten path, the group stayed in a local mountain gite in the town of Aroumd. Aroumd is a traditional Berber village neighbouring Imlil and overlooking the incredible mountain range. Living alongside the locals, Vatsalaya shared that;

“Being in the mountains felt like stepping outside the world I knew. Surrounded by nature, practising morning yoga while listening to the river, I felt my body and mind finally slow down and reset. The balance of warm days and crisp nights created a sense of comfort I hadn’t felt in a long time. What stayed with me most were the people — welcoming, present, and truly passionate about living, something city life often makes us forget. The experience reminded me that the essence of life lies in connection, presence, celebrating life, and allowing ourselves the freedom to simply be.”

The adventure takes 2-3 days. Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, offers panoramic views of the contrasting snowcapped mountains and the Sahara Desert. At 4,167 meters, this hike is more appealing to tourists than other big summits, as it is feasible with determination, good health and fitness, as no mountaineering skills or gear are needed. When hiking, whether it’s to the summit or a day hike, you are legally required to have a guide. This was introduced in 2018 after a fatal incident near Mount Toubkal, involving two tourists. This law was implemented to protect tourists and allow them to hike safely. Do not embark on this journey alone; a guide must accompany you. A guide not only makes your hike safer - with insider knowledge of the weather, the most efficient routes, and the region’s history and culture - but also far more enjoyable. Offering you local insight, a guide will transform this into a meaningful and educational trip whilst keeping you safe. It is required that you bring your passport when entering the national park, so guards can record your details and ensure your guide is licensed for your own safety. If climbing to the summit, there are three checkpoints; on day-trip hikes, you will only encounter the entrance checkpoint.

Spanning 380 Km2, Morocco’s first national park invites travellers to explore its towering peaks, natural springs and its lush valleys. The best time to visit the national park is either April to May, or September to October. During the Autumn, the weather is the most stable, allowing the easiest climb whilst avoiding the unbearable beaming summer heat and the chilling winter conditions. Throughout spring, nature is at its peak, with flowers in full bloom, making this idyllic hike even more enchanting as the landscapes around you flourish. It is recommended to hike in the autumn months due to the most stable conditions, with dry, steady terrain. It is ideal if you wish to reach the summit.

Going on a one-day hike is common, as not everyone is built to reach the summit. There are a plethora of hikes that offer amazing views with a fraction of the time and effort. Going early in the morning is recommended to avoid the blistering sun, allowing you to enjoy a cooler climate on your hike. Starting in Aroumd, you get a breathtaking view of the towering mountainsides brimming with clay-toned houses. Passing Aroumd, you enter the Imlil Valley, walking alongside the small stream, you start your hike up to the national park entrance. After a steep rocky incline, you reach the park entrance. Although there is no official entrance fee, it is mandatory to have an accompanying guide; the cost will vary based on your guide. Ranging from £30 to £40 per day, you get your money’s worth. After having your passport checked, you are free to adventure through the Atlas Mountains.

As you continue to climb, you will be passed by mules, donkeys and locals that are making their way to smaller Berber villages located on mountains. The terrain is sparse and varied, with lush green patches contrasting with dry, crumbling boulders clinging to the mountainside. The higher you climb, the better the views. At the deepest part of the valley, a stream flows. As the snowcaps melt, the water flows down the slopes and down the mountain. With plunge pools and waterfalls in various areas of the mountain range, these hidden gems are heavenly. Continuing to climb, you pass wild sheep perched on the grassy slopes. These simple views are spectacular, offering a raw, untouched view of the earth.

A common place to stop is Chaharouch Springs. This waterfall is located in Sidi Chamharouch, a village known as a pilgrimage site for healing. This is a key rest stop on a hike. With a limited number of restaurants and cafes around the springs, it is recommended to bring a packed lunch, as food is not guaranteed along the route. Cool off in the stream and take a refreshing dip in the springs’ plunge pool. Although cold, you will dry off in the warmth of the Moroccan sun.

This six-hour moderate hike offers you a taste of the Atlas Mountains. The untouched beauty of Toubkal National Park is idyllic; this surreal, authentic experience is unforgettable. At 2330 meters, you are presented with breathtaking views; surrounded by nature, your senses come alive. The chirping birds fill your ears as they circle the mountains, and the beaming sun kisses your skin as you start your trek down. This is the perfect way to spend your day in Morocco and an adventure you will never forget.

Whilst the sun is at its peak, take a nap to recharge after your long hike. Do some yoga outside and reconnect with nature. This peaceful valley is the perfect place to unwind. Sitting outside and appreciating the view feels like an attraction within itself. As time passes and the sun sets, the rugged peaks are illuminated. Golden hues flood the sky as it transforms into a natural work of art, like something out of a painting; this scenery, this unforgettable ending to the day, is picture-perfect.

These dramatic landscapes leave you feeling calm and connected to nature. Disconnected from the outside world, you can fully immerse yourself in Imlil. Their natural beauty shines over tourist hotspots and makes you appreciate the quiet stillness of the Atlas Mountains. As you settle into the local rhythm of Imlil, you are culturally immersed in the Berber villages and their simple mountain life. Although you came for the scenery, it’s the warmth and hospitality of the locals that make you want to stay. This authentic experience is unforgettable and truly touches the soul. As you return to the city chaos, the peace of the mountains lingers as a distant memory.

Your 20s are often seen as the time for independence, travelling the world, moving cities and ultimately living a spontaneous lifestyle – milestones that don’t usually align with the responsibilities of first-time pet ownership. But, Cats Protection has revealed in their 2025 CATS (Cats and Their Stats UK) Report that young people are more likely than ever to own a cat.

For a long time now, cats have been the second-most popular pet in the UK, following behind dogs which roughly 30% of the UK own pdsa.

Cats Protection have stated that there were 10.2 million UK households owned cats UK in 2025, making up 24% of the population.

The distribution of cat ownership across the English regions is largely consistent, however, there are notably more owners in London, with 28% of households owning a cat. Whilst on the other end of the spectrum, only 17% in North East England.

However, one of the most significant changes in cat ownership noted by Cats Protection is the increase in 18-34 year olds obtaining a cat in the last five years. 31% now own a cat, a figure that has risen 6% since 2020. Interestingly, there has also been a decrease in the percentage of 35 – 54 year olds owning a cat, whilst 55+ year olds have remained consistently low in their ownership.

So, why are young people choosing to take on the commitment of purchasing a cat, whilst data shows that other age groups are choosing to not.

In the CATS report, digital engagement manager Vicki Greenfield, suggested that social media has been pivotal:

“the digital world is increasingly playing a central role in educating, advising and influencing people of all ages.”

This doesn’t come as a shock with social media filled with cat content. In fact, the #cat hashtag on Instagram has gathered a whopping 313M posts, whilst TikTok has also gained over 75.6M #cat posts. Many of these posts advertise cats as being the perfect pet and provide a wealth of ownership tips, alongside the classic funny cat fail video which have been popular since social media established.

We already know that young people are highly influenced by social media and clearly the posts fed to them are encouraging the ownership of cats.

The CATS report also stated that young owners are using social media as their main source of knowledge. Data showed that 47% of 18-34 year olds are turning to YouTube 40% are turning to TikTok for advice on how to take care of their cat.

In light of this, the report has raised concerns that social media has resulted in young owners contacting their vet for advice less often. This can have a detrimental effect on the welfare of cats in the UK, as owners may be influenced by online recommendations that aren’t actually beneficial.

Cats Protection, however, is using their social media channels for good. They have recognised the influence of online posts on young cat owners and hopes to create educational content that reaches a large audience and “improve cat welfare at a huge scale” Cats Protection.

But where should you take yourself this winter? I’ll save you the hassle. I delve into the pros and cons of the three main locations you should be considering before your next ski adventure.

In a world where AI is taking over, the way that news is consumed is also rapidly changing. With the convenience of AI, audiences can now ask questions about news stories, which would have required more time and research before the time of chatbots. However, where does trust come into the conversation?

The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism is a research institute, committed to add to the conversations regarding the future of journalism. According to their 2026 Digital News Report, the usage of AI for the purpose of news has grown from 7% to 10% compared to last year, and this percentage is taken up mostly by younger audiences. With the inclusion of AI, social media and video networks now take up 56% of the news consumption habits of the public. So what does this mean for the future of news?

First, it is important to look at the age range within which AI is consumed most for the purpose of news. The highest percentage of usage comes from young adults between 18-34, taking up 32%. The percentages are significantly lower for adult audiences, with 19% for 35-54 year olds, and only 5% for 55+. It is also crucial to note that most of these percentages include ‘news lovers’, so their usage is higher due to their curiosity towards news, with 19% representing those who are very interested in news, and 7% those who are not.

Besides AI, social media is leading the way within news consumption, but the result of this is that the need for traditional media is becoming increasingly lower. An interesting parallel can be drawn, as even though audiences consume more news on social media and through AI chatbots, they are also afraid of unreliable sources and fake news. As we live in a fast paced world where people want quick and specific answers, AI can act as a useful tool to get information. However, AI is still not 100% accurate, which is why it is important not to completely rely on it, and to gain information from other sources as well.

Trust is one of the most important subject matters that needs to be discussed within this topic. Another one is convenience. Interestingly, people are afraid of fake news and believe that social media and AI can be viewed as unreliable, however these have become the most convenient and quickest ways to access news, which is why they are at the top of audience’s lists.

What is a compelling addition to this is that those who are regular users of AI are also more likely to get their news stories there as well. Overall, 20% of the population trusts AI for news, but when looking at those who frequently use AI chatbots, 44% of them said that they would trust AI to access news as well. On the other hand, within the 17% who don’t use AI, they expressed that they would not trust AI for news.

It is also important to establish in what capacity audiences are using AI to learn more about news. 42% of people use AI because if they ask follow-up questions about a news story, they will be presented with more information, and 39% because they consider AI to be the quickest source of news. Other responses got similarly high percentages, with 36% for those who choose AI because it ‘summarises complicated stories’ and 35% for those who prefer AI because it can provide an answer to any given question, and can gather articles from other publications and make it ‘into a single response’.

So, are we talking about trust, or convenience? And what is the price that has to be paid for convenience?

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology highlights the dangers of excessive dependency on AI, as their Media Lab Study has found that ‘participants who relied on AI systems to verify facts actually got worse at detecting misinformation on their own when chatbots were taken away’.

During this research, participants had the option to test how well they can detect fake news with and without the help of AI. The success rate was high with the help of AI chatbots, as participants were 21% more likely to detect fake news, however, when it came to their ability through independent identification, the percentage dropped by 15%. As a result, participants in this study ‘gradually shifted from active self-reliance to passive acceptance of AI guidance’.

As people will rely more and more on AI, their skills to do research on their own and their ability to spot fake news will get harder as time passes. Audiences need to learn how to use AI efficiently without falling into the trap of chatbots doing all the research for them, relying solely on information they provide. To protect unbiased and trustworthy journalism in the future, even if audiences are using AI for news consumption, it is crucial for them to click-through to published news articles, and to use AI in moderation.

With cheap plane tickets and a flurry of social media attention, more Britons are attempting the ‘extreme day trip’. But, what actually is this new travel trend and is it really a viable way of seeing the world.

It certainly isn’t for everyone. However, for those who perhaps have limited annual leave, can’t afford a week abroad, or simply love to sleep in their own bed, the extreme day trip could be ideal.

The concept is easy. You book the first flight out, taking off before sunrise and land in your location just as the shops and attractions begin to open. From here, it’s a race against the clock to fit in as much sightseeing and activities as possible, before flying home late at night. No expensive hotel needed. Sounds like an adventure, right?

This new way of travelling has certainly taken off, no pun intended. In fact, experts at Confused.com suggest that as many as 3 in 10 Brits (30%) have already been on an extreme day trip, and a further 13% have been on multiple.

Many of these individuals have taken to social media to promote this, posting snaps and videos of glorious beaches, attractive food spots and iconic landmarks, all in one day. But are these social media depictions simply too good to be true?

The members of the ‘extreme day trip’ online groups don’t think so. 24hr travellers and those interested in the trend have formed various communities, particularly on Facebook. One of the largest groups boasts over 354k members, while others are centered around UK departure airports. These groups act as a hub for these daring travellers, providing them with a space to share photos and details of their day trips, offer itineraries, reveal top tips, and post about new flight deals. From joining these groups and connecting with some of the members, it’s fascinating to learn more about the passion and creativity involved in curating the perfect 24 hours abroad.

One member from the ‘Extreme day trips from Bristol Aiport’ group shared their exciting day trip to Monaco, in which they boarded a 7:20am flight to Nice and then got straight on the number 80 bus that took them into the heart of Monte Carlo. Upon arriving they spent the day walking the F1 track, car spotting, visiting casinos and walking around the marina and palace, before arriving back at Nice airport by 7:45pm.

It was interesting to read about this itinerary as I myself recently visited Monte Carlo for the day whilst on a trip in the South of France and recognised how qualities like the walkability and the number of activities made it a good day out.

But what actually motivates these travellers to spend a single day abroad rather than several days or even a week.

I spoke to Rick, creator of extremedaytrips.com, which is a site designed to make the process of booking extreme day trips easier, allowing for users to:

“search several weeks at once and use filters that are specifically useful for day trips”

“People can also save searches, set price alerts, view ready-made itineraries and then book directly with the airline.”

“The main aim is to take away a lot of the repetitive searching and make it easier to find trips that are genuinely achievable in one day.”

When asked about why there has been a rise in this travel trend, he explained that he thinks:

“people have less spare time and less disposable income than they used to, but they still want to travel and have new experiences.”

“An Extreme Day Trip might only require one day off work, or no time off at all if you travel at the weekend.”

“You also avoid the cost of a hotel, and the flights can be very cheap because you are often using less popular services early in the morning and late at night.”

“It allows people to see more places and make their travel budget go further.”

“There is also something nice about regularly having a trip to look forward to. Instead of having one big holiday and then waiting several months for the next one, you could have a different city or experience planned every month or two.”

Cost is clearly a defining motivator for extreme day trippers. According to Luton Airport’s 2024 travel trends report, around 39% of ‘holi-day’ travellers stated that eliminating accommodation costs was one of their main reasons for booking day trips. This doesn’t come as a surprise with hotel and Airbnb stays remaining increasingly expensive, with European accommodation costing an average of €150 - €250 per night.

I also spoke to Dan, an avid extreme day tripper, who believes it is the perfect option for fulfilling his love of travelling whilst not breaking the bank. He has visited Amsterdam, Faro, Malaga, Basel, Ibiza and most recently Prague as day trips. He took the time to discuss his recent trip to Prague:

“A few weeks ago a friend and I wanted to take a day trip to another city in England, but after looking at train prices we realised, as always, that it would be cheaper for us to go and visit a European city for the day.”

“With that in mind, we spent a few days searching for the cheapest and most viable flights on Skyscanner.”

“We considered Prague, Tirana and Rome, but ended up deciding on Prague as it was marginally cheaper than the others at £60. The flight to Tirana was also slightly longer so we would have had less time in the city and Stanstead was the departure airport for the other flights, which was more difficult and expensive to get to than Luton Airport due to the cost of trains.”

“We boarded onto a National Express coach which cost £30 for a return ticket, which ironically is half the price of the plane ticket, despite it only being a 66 mile journey, whilst Prague is 855 miles away!”

“We also laughed at the fact that this was the cheapest option to get to the airport, with the train costing £55 – practically the same cost as the flight!”

“We arrived into Prague at 9am local time, giving us 12 hours before our 9pm flight back home.”

“As soon as we arrived we bought a 24hr unlimited public transport ticket which cost around 152.58 Czech Koruna (£5). This is an all-inclusive ticket, which gave us unlimited travel on bus, train and metro which was great and we both agreed that this was one of the best cities we had been to for public transport.”

“After getting off the bus, we instantly got on a metro that took us into the heart of Prague city centre. When compared to the London Underground, we found it was significantly cleaner, less busy and better managed, with underground trains coming every three minutes.”

“The city itself was incredibly beautiful and we spent the day visiting the main tourist attractions like the Charles Bridge, the Prague Astronomical clock and the Christmas markets, before heading back to the airport to catch our 9pm flight.

“We arrived back into England at 11:45pm and were back home by 1:30am, meaning we had successfully conquered Prague in 24hrs.”

Prague is a popular destination for extreme day trippers, but Rick from extremedaytrips.com has also shared that

“Ireland and Northern Ireland are probably among the easiest. Places such as Dublin, Cork and Belfast have lots of short flights from the UK, there is no language barrier for most British travellers, and the flight schedules can give you a surprisingly long day. For example, it is sometimes possible to have around 14 hours in Cork, which is plenty of time to explore the city properly.”

“Some want a little winter sunshine, so destinations such as Alicante are popular because the airport is close to the city and the beach.”

“Others want to see a famous European landmark or tick somewhere off their list. Trips to see the Colosseum in Rome, the Leaning Tower of Pisa or the Sagrada Família in Barcelona are all very achievable in a day with the right flights and a bit of planning.”

However, are extreme day trips really as smooth and exciting as they seem? What happens when things don’t go to plan?

Confused.com found that more than 2 in 5 (43%) day trippers still faced the usual issues that you would on a normal holiday, particularly flight delays which can eat into limited time in the location and cause added stress to the day.

Some people may also worry about the exhaustion of spending the whole day travelling. Do you truly have the energy to wholeheartedly immersive yourself in the culture and experience of the country?

One Tiktoker who has been on several day trips admitted that it is very tiring, which is why she only does them on a Saturday, as knowing that she has the Sunday to recover before work on Monday makes it all worthwhile.

The general consensus is that extreme day trips are absolutely worth it for those who want a quick fix of international travel and are willing to compromise on a lack of sleep and potential stress to enjoy a new country.

Rick agrees, suggesting that day trips are amazing provided you:

“give yourself as much time as possible at the destination”

“I like to make the most of every minute. I normally work out what we want to see, the best route between everything and a few backup options in case something is closed or we have more time than expected.”

“You do not want to spend a large part of a short trip standing around trying to plan the rest of the day on your phone, especially with a poor signal or low battery.”

This underrated destination is often overlooked by travellers; however, as you travel from vibrant landscapes to the cultural fusion capital, you will be spoilt for choice, with an optimal balance throughout your journey. The remote rainforest towns are brimming with unmatchable biodiversity. If you’re looking for an authentic experience, then look no further; Panama is the place for you. The capital is brimming with culture and rich in history; this unique destination is the only capital to have a rainforest within its city limits.

Panama is generally considered safe for travellers and is among the safer destinations in Central America. Panama is an extremely welcoming country; its locals are friendly and eager to show you their vibrant culture. Like any destination, Panama has its bad and good; caution remains important. Safety will depend on your location. It is advised that travellers avoid the Darién Gap, a remote border region consisting of dense jungle and higher crime rates. This area has been labelled with do not travel warnings. There are a few high-risk neighbourhoods within Panama City that should be avoided: El Chorrillo, Curundú, Calidonia & Santa Ana. It is advised to avoid these areas after dark and to keep a close eye on your belongings and surroundings. There is a low crime rate; tourists are not targets and are not in serious danger. This peaceful country is tourist-friendly and will welcome you with open arms.

The Capital

Panama City is the capital of Panama. The city is centrally located and a hub for tourism, trade, and culture. Located by the Gulf of Panama, this capital offers urban, coastal and tropical landscapes.

Panama is best known for its canal, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Panama Canal is a major contributor to global trade. This shortcut between the two oceans simplifies trade and connects markets. Panama is a unique and interesting country, although known for its role in global trade, it is rich in wildlife and nature, with over a thousand bird species. This nature hotspot is full of surprises.

The Panama Canal is definitely worth visiting, with tickets costing only £13 and offering access to the observation deck, where you can watch passing ships enter and exit the canal. This front-row seat to transit between locks is well worth the admission fee: as giant cargo ships pass through, water gushes to fill and empty the lock, making this handmade waterway impressive. Another of Panama’s unique natural wonders awaits behind the Golden Frog Sanctuary. The Square Tree Trail is renowned for the distinctive rectangular shapes of the surrounding trees. Scientists, tourists, and locals are amazed by its peculiar structure, which remains an unsolved mystery. Leigh Bowery’s life was a work of art. His theatrical approach to everything created space for self-expression, allowing others to also push boundaries that Bowery helped break. Bowery’s life was never dull; as a fashion designer, club promoter, and performance artist. Bowery kept himself busy through his different roles and professions. The Australian moved to London in October of 1980, where Bowery created a name for himself in London’s club scene through his flamboyant fashion and his growing reputation.

Bowery’s theatrics increased with the opening of Taboo in 1985, a club where you’re surrounded by sex, drugs and avant-garde fashion; Bowery was in his element. Taboo was a queer fashion hotspot overflowing with different garments; from feathers to striking prints and faces caked with makeup, everyone looked out of the ordinary. Taboo was a safe place where people could express themselves freely, push gender norms and show off their iconic looks. This queer playground is where Bowery created history.

His body was his canvas, and every night he’d paint a different picture. His bold looks are now on show in the Tate Modern, giving the public a glimpse of his lifestyle and how his flamboyant style changed the fashion industry. The face of the exhibition (look 34) perfectly encapsulated Bowery; the mini lime green feathered dress accentuates Bowery’s chest as he rebelled against gender stereotypes, which he’s paired with a pair of black stockings and black wedge heels.

The contrast between the chalky white face paint and the blue PVA that frames its way onto his bold abstract makeup dramatises the whole look. This trademark splatter on his head acts as a form of concealment, as Bowery shape-shifts into a different person, each outfit giving him the chance to sculpt into a new performance. The Tate states that ‘London’s nightclubs became the catwalk for his creations’; a catwalk is set up in the exhibition displaying Look 34 and many other iconic creations.

Bowery’s provocative style was theatrical: his life was art, and he was always telling a story and always making a statement. Described as ‘modern art on legs’ by the Tate, Bowery’s blend of punk and new romantic was ‘inspired by glam rock stars like David Bowie, Slade and Roxy Music’. All of Bowery’s pieces were one of a kind, as he used his body or clientele as a canvas on which he sculpted his vision. Not wanting to have his pieces mass-produced, he made each one unique and used London’s nightlife as his design’s debut.

Another look that is showcased in the Tate that perfectly displays Bowery’s character is the green pinstripe blazer and shorts with silver sequins. Bowery wore this to the Alternative Miss World 1986, where eyes were drawn to him as the light caught the sequins, making him a walking disco ball. This look is wild and bizarre, but it fits Bowery perfectly; the distinct silver sequin crash helmet adds to the persona he created. Bowery has painted a pair of giant black caricature lips that are consuming his face, contrasting against his milky clown base layer. The look is complete with Bowery’s signature glasses that have appeared in many of his looks where he is repeatedly photographed with them.

Even after his passing in 1944, Bowery’s fashion influence has lived on with designers like Alexander McQueen, Charles Jerffery and Richard Quinn. “His influence lives on in every look that dares to go a bit too far, that’s a bit too much – and that’s exactly the point,” says Charles Jeffery. Although Leigh kept his designs underground, they impacted the fashion industry worldwide; many looks that have graced the runway have been directly inspired by his flamboyant and theatrical style.

Alexander McQueen’s AWO9 Fall ready-to-wear show created a statement at Paris Fashion Week in 2009. The shapeshifting silhouettes created by the clothing mirror the outrageous shapes Bowery created with his body, structured clothing and added prosthetics. Each model features a different eccentric headpiece, adding to their already towering figure in their 6-inch heels. Their faces captured the audience’s attention; Bowery’s signature clown white skin with overdrawn clown lips featuring an array of blacks and reds was plastered onto the models’ faces.

Similar to Bowery’s queer club scene, Charles Jerffery created a name for himself in Dalston, where he turned Vogue Fabrics into his LOVERBOY club night. The iconic nights blended high fashion with the club scene as the queer community dressed to impress in their vivacious outfits, with bold make-up and body paint. Jeffery’s fashion career flourished shortly after this, which has now developed into the Lore of Loverboy, Jeffery’s recent collection in June 2024. The clothing pieces and the way they are presented show clear links to Bowery’s work, the clown-like makeup adorning the models’ faces and the bright prints that feature on some of the garments.

Bowery pushed boundaries within the fashion world, leaving his mark so that the future of queer fashion could flourish in his footsteps. Bowery’s impact is seen within the famous TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race, a reality show where drag queens battle it out to be “America’s Next Drag Superstar”. The queens participate in challenges, showcasing their drag makeup, their bold fashion statements and their overall performances. Much like Bowery and his friends in the underground London club scene, faces are caked with makeup, and queens are strutting their stuff as if it’s a fashion show.

Drag’s origins can be traced back to ancient Greece and Rome, with men impersonating women in theatre. This grew with Shakespearean theatre; with women not being allowed to act, men played dress-up and kept the love stories going. This is far from what drag is considered now, but it later opened a gateway for men to experiment and express a hidden side of themselves. The LGBTQ+ community has suffered centuries of oppression and hatred, though Bowery was able to push these boundaries; there were queens that walked before him who pioneered dark times, allowing the queer community to flourish as it is now.

In a day and age where social media has ceased to exist, trends and viral moments are forever present. Willian Dorsey Swann ‘was an expert at the production of viral cultural content focused on self-expression; the drag balls of L Street, Washington, D.C.’ Swann’s underground activities introduced a whole new world to the queer community, which Bowery later followed with nightclubs like Taboo, Cha Cha Club and Fridge. Swann faced his challenges as a black gay man in the 1880s, but he pioneered resistances, broke boundaries and was the first true drag queen for the LGBTQ+ community.

The theatrical lifestyle created with drag is something the public are now accustomed to; things aren’t underground anymore, they are broadcast on TV and plastered all over social media. Thanks to the help of Bowery and other historical queer icons, the queer community has found it easier to express themselves and to continue to push gender-confining boundaries. People no longer have to stick to the status quo and can choose how they wish to be; the fashion community is blessed with such an outlet that allows one to express oneself.

Queer fashion today is flourishing with queer icons like Chappell Roan, RuPaul and Billy Porter leading this generation. RuPaul, ‘the queen of drag’, has created a welcoming community for drag queens and the LGBTQ+ community by promoting being your true self. RuPaul has aided many in accepting who they are and helping them thrive on their self-expression journey. ‘You are the editor of your own life; you get to conduct the screenplay how you want it,’ says RuPaul on his Instagram, advocating for people to accept themselves and to be what they want to be, not what society wants them to be. RuPaul not only has made a huge influence on the queer fashion community through his extravagant looks and his flawless drag makeup, but he’s been a pioneering voice for the queer community as a whole.

Billy Porter is continuously challenging traditional gender conventions; the American actor and singer struts the red carpet, leaving crowds speechless with each look he parades. Many of the outfits that Porter has worn, he has helped design, like Bowery; Billy has an eye for fashion and always wants to make a statement. At the 2019 Met Gala, surrounded by six hunky men and glitz and glam, Billy made his entrance on a litter. He then spread his wings on the carpet, wearing an elaborate black and gold one-piece. Billy’s theatrical nature was similar to Bowery’s; entering a room, his attire always drew attention.

In 2025, there are numerous queer icons who inspire others and celebrate queer fashion. Chappell Roan, the current queer icon, is ‘known for her queer pop anthems as much as for her drag-inspired looks’. Chappell’s flamboyant style was inspired by new romanticism, something she and Bowery have in common. As well as the clown white base, which she wears in response to people in her hometown calling ‘gay people clowns’. Chappell advocates for queer fashion and the queer community, saying, ‘I encourage people to wear what makes them feel hot…The show is not only on stage, but it’s also in line, at the merch table, next to you, [in the] front row.’

The media is filled to the brim with queer representation; the queer fashion community is thriving, and there are many kings and queens that are helping to inspire others and pioneer the future of queer fashion. Bowery has created a legacy that will carry on through photographs, clothing and memories; his gender-bending ways will never be forgotten.

All my life I had a plan that after I had finished school, I would go to University and get a degree. Once I reached sixth form, my school pushed all of the students to apply for university. However, finishing my degree in Media, Journalism and Publishing had got me thinking whether getting a degree and spending three years taking loans from the bank was worth it.

I feel like many schools in 2026 are pushing their students to apply not only for University but for degree apprenticeships and going straight into work.

According to UCAS, by 2030, 1 million students will apply for higher education. This suggests that going to university is still going to be extremely popular.

Do I wish that I hadn’t enrolled into university? No. However, I do wish that there had been more awareness surrounding what else is out there other than a three year degree.

The Evil Dead franchise started in 1981 with Bruce Campbell reading from the famous Necronomicon and summoning the dead. His second film Evil Dead II, introduced his wielding of the iconic chainsaw. However, following the recent film, Evil Dead Burn, has the franchise lost comedic character since 1981?

(Ignoring the 2013 re-make) The Evil Dead series picked up again with the hit Evil Dead Rise 2023, where we saw slight easter eggs and teasers of the earlier films. However, the film strode away from the comedic horror to prioritise more gore and shock factors.

The contemporary outlook of horror films is to prioritise CGI and heavy editing. However in Evil Dead II, there are several moments where the rawness of editing increases its comedic value. For example, when an eyeball from one of the ghouls travels through the air and lands in one of the character’s mouths. Seeing the eyeball on a stick adds a little more character to the whole film.

Evil Dead Burn encapsulated slightly more comedy than the last two in the newer franchise with small comedic phrases and moments. For example, when Thya takes off the grandma’s false leg. The slight pause of realisation from the deadite was a comedic gem.

Although you will never be able to recreate the iconic Evil Dead franchise, Evil Dead Burn was certainly groovy.

Sunday evening saw an impressive second victory for Harry Brook’s ODI team, as England chalked up an untouchable score of 387 runs within 50 overs. Notable performances came from Ben Duckett, scoring 141 with the bat, and Sam Curran taking four wickets with the ball.

The win sewed up a 2-1 ODI series victory, which shortly followed their 4-0 whitewash against India – the number one ranked team globally.

This summer has begun in rather turbulent fashion for England Cricket. A first Test win against New Zealand was shadowed by Captain Ben Stokes and Bowler Gus Atkinson breaking curfew on the eve of their victory. They were both sanctioned.

Stokes missed the second Test at the Oval and returned for the series decider at Trent Bridge, where he announced his immediate retirement on day four. England lost the series 2-1.

Soon after, Head Coach Brendon McCullum announced his departure from the Test side. He saw Stokes as the spearhead of the ‘Bazball’, a style of cricket that focused on high-tempo, aggressive play.

England fans will be reassured to see what results the squad can deliver in the shorter formats of the game. That said, work needs to be done to restore the team to the forefront of global Test cricket.

Stokes publicly named Harry Brook as the most suitable successor, but nothing is confirmed. The announcement is expected to come before the start of Pakistan’s tour of England, beginning on the 19^th August.

Christmas is the time for giving, whether that be handmade coasters or knitted scarfs, you could find everything at the Oxford Etsy Christmas Market.

With over 70 local makers and sellers, the market filled the Oxford University Examination Schools on the 17th November 2024.

Not only was there arts and crafts but also food and drink stands, offering hot chocolate and sweet treats or you could have indulged and tried snacks from the Indian cuisine stand. The market was open until 4pm with a choir singing Christmas carols as well. For many sellers, it was their first time attending this year's Etsy market. For Rangan Goldsmith she said:

“I’m a member of the Oxfordshire arts week, which means that we get first dibs on the stalls, so that’s how I came to know about it”

These markets are a really good opportunity for small businesses to grow and develop a network of customers. When asked about the success of these markets she said,

 “It depends on what you’re selling really, because I’ve done really badly in village halls and I’ve done really well in urban areas, so it depends on where your audience is.”

Rangan’s stall sold her handmade designs printed onto notebooks, coasters and decorations. 

There were also many environmentally friendly products as well. The Cece and Klem stall, which sold hand drawn prints, coasters and cushions made it one of their top priorities. When talking to the stall holder Lissie she said,

“So everything is sustainable, from using glass which can be recycled to using biodegradable wrapping products. Even the cushions which we use recycled plastic bottles for the cushion inners, so yeah it’s more eco-friendly.”

The Etsy Christmas Market will hopefully be back next year, with even more stalls and an even bigger audience.

Brittany Broski was featured in Vanity Fair’s The New Late Night Issue, alongside other rising interviewers such as SubwayTakes’ Kareem Rahma, and Hot Ones’ Sean Evans. Even though they create completely different content, they exist in the same realm: they are the next generation of interviewers, who are changing the game. Brittany established her own channel Royal Court out of her love for Game of Thrones and dragons, Rahma interviews people on the subway, and Evans asks deep and unique questions from celebrities who are trying not to cry while eating spicy wings.

Brittany first appeared on TikTok as ‘kombucha girl’, and the story is quite short on that: she tried kombucha for the first time, filmed her reaction, which then became a meme. The next day she woke up with millions of views and realised that she would try to ‘ride this wave’ and possibly make a career out of this.

She has built her whole brand on the fact that she is a ‘certified fangirl’, which is something that women are usually scrutinized for, however she used it to her advantage. Because being a fan of something/someone means you care, and caring is cool. She created her own unique interview show called Royal Court on YouTube, the tagline of which is: ‘Welcome to Royal Court, where pop culture royalty compete for a spot on my trusted council’, in the words of Brittany.

She divides her episodes into three different parts: starting out with an interrogation with a spotlight on the artist (both figuratively and literally) then comes a part, where guests usually bring some type of gift, which could be food specific to where they’re from, merch, or a one of a kind item, so this is called the ‘Royal Tribute’. Lastly comes the ‘Coat of Arms’, where she makes the guests draw their family crests, while asking them more serious questions about their careers. Also, all guests dress up in a cape and some type of head accessory, which further adds to the interviews not being perfectly polished: they might have a Dior set hiding under that cape, but that’s not what the focus is on.

Brittany has had some of the biggest names across industries on her channel, such as Tony Hawk, Kyle Maclachlan, Anne Hathaway, Charli XCX, Elijah Wood, and many more. The fact that Broski cares so deeply shows in her interviews, as similarly to Sean Evans, celebrities usually get surprised by how deep she goes in her research, and she sometimes even brings up facts that the celebrities themselves don’t even remember. Another thing she does successfully, is bring out the funniest parts of celebrities. She asks whimsical questions which require whimsical answers, and it is so evident, that most of these celebrities don’t even hesitate. Their personalities are right there, it just depends on the questions whether they show those personalities or not.

In a world filled with questions about what actors took from set and what their favourite memory is from filming, Brittany’s interviews are a breath of fresh air. In her ‘realm’, using the example of The House of Dragons’ Matt Smith, the topic of conversation goes more in the direction of how he would greet a dragon whose name he forgot.

So, what really is it about these shows that makes people watch them time and time again? It’s the fact that they’re unpredictable, real, and human. Celebrities are humans just like us, and if Dylan O’Brien says that a pack of 8th grade boys scare him and would make him run as fast as he was in The Maze Runner, then that is as real as it gets, in my opinion.

Cordelia Cullen is an English Literature and Creative Writing student at Oxford Brookes, and also the president of the Media, Journalism, and Publishing Society. Being a fan of Brittany and Royal Court, she said that her favourite thing about the show is the unexpected answers Brittany manages to extrapolate from her guests.

Brittany can so neatly bring up deep cuts of these celebrities’ lives that almost every episode has a ‘How did you know that?’ moment, which just makes the interview work even more. ‘I think by disarming them in that way sometimes works, because you get a more laid-back version of them, and she does that so well’, added Cordelia.

If you grew up in the early 2000s and were a fangirl, fan fiction was not an unknown concept to you, and Brittany is no stranger to it either. She famously wrote one about Cole Sprouse, which, to his complete surprise, she shared with him when he went on Royal Court. This was one of the very first episodes that blew up and completely shocked people, as the thing about fan fiction is that it is mostly anonymous, and private.

However, what Brittany did in this situation is let go of that fear, and show it to Cole. If you really think about it, he is also just human, which is why his reaction was genuine and hilarious: he was giggling while reading it, could not put it down, and even asked Brittany to sign it for him. To this day, this is the second most watched video on Royal Court with 6.8 million views.

One of her recent videos was with Harry Styles. Yes, THE Harry Styles, who Brittany described as THE guest. One thing the public knows about Harry Styles is that we actually don’t know much about him. Other than paparazzi pictures and the following stories that circulate from there, Harry is a very private person, especially since his solo career started when One Direction split up. He doesn’t go on press tours, and only does a few interviews (mostly with Zane Lowe for Apple) upon album releases.

For his new album Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally, he joined Brittany Broski’s Royal Court, making her audience lose their minds, with people in her comment section saying ‘I didn’t know this was an option’, and even the official YouTube channel commented ‘IS THAT HARRY’ we scream in unison’. In short, this was a shock to a lot of people, even to the ones working at YouTube.

In this episode, Harry talked about his favourite English swear words, how he could audition for Britain’s Got Talent with his talent of ‘eating a remarkable amount of yogurt’, and how he made the discovery that the equivalent of girl dinner is eating a rotisserie chicken over the sink, also known as boy dinner.

His chemistry was immediate with Brittany, as he kept up the banter with her, sang bits of Shania Twain’s Honey I’m Home, and he even said that he was getting too comfortable on the show. And as a plus, he mentioned that he watches Mike Tyson’s 10 greatest knockouts on YouTube if he can’t sleep at night. You probably did not think that this was the information you’d find out about Harry Styles in 2026, but there you go.

In all seriousness, these mundane moments are what bring us closer to celebrities, and allow audiences to connect with them more, which is why keeping up these interview styles is important for fandom culture as well.

Cordelia added that ‘at the end of the day we put celebrities on such a massive pedestal so it’s kind of nice to take them off it a bit, and just to see them as themselves. It’s just breaking down that barrier’.

At the end of her interviews, Brittany always asks guests whether they would like to promote something, and even though most do, some of them even choose not to bring up their upcoming projects, which justifies the vibe of the interview. The interviews are actually more about getting to know them more as humans, rather than getting to know their projects.

Ever since her success, Brittany has been brought on the red carpet for the House of Dragons, Mickey 17, and Gladiator 2. She also hosted the Global Fan Event for Dune: Part Three, and she continues to wow the industry with her talent, making it to Time Magazine’s TIME100 Creators in 2025. This shows that the industry is opening its eyes to her talent as well, reserving a spot for her in the future of interviewing.

Their dark eyes look up towards me as I walk past trying not to make eye contact. I was always told all they want are drugs. Their pale skin clinging to their bones as they look at me, whilst huddled within a rough coat and a sleeping bag.

Christmas is the time for good food, back to back films, laughter and cheer. For the homeless people of Oxford however, their Christmas is spent sitting on the cold wet streets watching passers by, feeling dehumanised.

After coming to Oxford Brookes University from a relatively small town in Suffolk where homelessness is rare, I was appalled by just how many people were sitting on the streets. They sit on damp cardboard signs, holding paper cups with only a few pennies in them. Even though no one likes to be hassled on a busy morning or afternoon, seeing these people on the streets, especially around Christmas time, with no refuge or safety made me feel hopeless.

Oxford has many homeless shelters and soup kitchens that offer food, warmth and activities and advice on how to improve their life. The biggest factor contributing to the increasing number of rough sleepers is the affordability of housing within Oxfordshire and the Thames Valley. With Oxford being surrounded by a river and flood land, along with historic buildings with specific regulations surrounding what can or cannot be built around them, it’s very difficult to get planning permission. Along with the cost of living crisis, buying and renovating land has become increasingly expensive. It also means for some students and especially international students, that sustaining and developing a life in Oxford can be a real challenge.

Another factor contributing to the amount of homeless people on the streets of Oxford is due to many service jobs not paying enough for people to keep up with their rent, which forces people to struggle. The lack of support surrounding certain mental health illnesses is also a growing issue. When someone is struggling with their mental health, who lacks a strong support network it can be really difficult for them to hold down a tenancy.

Many stores offer a too good to go bag within Oxford. Pret a Manger in particular, has partnered with many charities to tackle homelessness. On their official website they state,

“Reducing waste and hunger

We’ve always tried to reduce the waste from our shops. Charities, shelters and community organisations come to collect our freshly made unsold food and give it to the people who need it most. For some, it’s their only meal of the day. We do it because it’s the right thing to do.” https://www.pret.co.uk/en-GB/the-pret-foundation

This is really helpful, around this time of year and it truly does make someone’s life on the streets that little bit better. Even though a sandwich here and there isn’t going to change their life in the long run, it can put a smile on their face, even if it lasts just a minute.

After walking the streets of Oxford, I spoke to one lady who had been on the streets for three years. She said,

“I didn’t get on with my mum and I always felt that she never loved me so I left.”

When asked how she gets through the Christmas period she said,

“It’s hard. Especially with everyone walking past with bags of presents and people looking at me like I’m a drug addict or I’m dangerous.”

I also spoke to another lady who has lived on the streets for three years also, with her dog- Bouncer. She said,

“Sometimes I just want to talk to someone. People think we are scammers and we’re not. We’re just unlucky”

What Are The Impacts?

There are social, mental and also physical impacts on being homeless and all of them are detrimental to those living on the streets. People who suffer from mental health problems are less likely to maintain relationships and be able to sustain a balanced life.

Many homeless people can also feel isolated and alone, when living on the streets, which makes it much easier for them to turn towards substance abuse and bad habits. However, not every homeless person is a drug addict.

The longer someone is out on the streets, the more difficult it is for charities and shelters to try and get them back onto their feet. There is such a large divide between those living on the streets to those living in a house, who have access to clean water, warmth and home cooked food. According to ‘Homeless Link’ it states on their website that,

“People with no home often have complex health needs. The mean age at death of homeless people was 46 years for men, 43 years for women. This compares to 76 years for men and 81 years for women in the general population”

Being homeless isn’t just about being on the streets, it’s also about not having access to the NHS or a GP, because to register, most practices need an address. Homeless people are more at risk of suffering from the winter flu, covid-19 and other viruses this Christmas. However even though they are living in the United Kingdom, where we pride ourselves on the NHS, many homeless people can’t access it. This puts up a real barrier, which needs to be broken. It’s truly sad to turn sick people away just because they have no address. However this is becoming the norm.

Although you may not know it, or want to know it, there are no magic fairies that visit every homeless person on the streets at night and offer them a place to stay or something warm to eat. No one goes around the streets and says ‘that’s a wrap for today, pack up and go home’. These aren’t actors and they’re not animals. They are human beings being forced to live in the cold and wet, begging for even just a bottle of water. Homelessness is as real as it gets when it comes to life and these people need our help.

What Can You do?

There are lots of ways in which you can help the homeless not only this Christmas but all throughout the year.

1. If you see someone sleeping rough, a small social interaction can go a long way especially for people who witness people walk past them everyday.

2. Buying a gift such as a sandwich and a bottle of water can also go very far at this time of year.

3. You could always buy the Big Issue. Especially in cities such as Oxford, it helps people without homes or on the verge of sleeping rough, earn a little bit of extra income.

4. Always be on the lookout for local initiatives that are helping raise money for the homeless and get involved!

Should I give cash?

Giving money is entirely a personal choice and one which you have no control over on what they spend it on. They might choose to spend it on themselves, friends or even their pets. However, not every homeless person is going to buy food or even possibly clothes and those with an addiction are more likely to spend your money on things that you personally wouldn’t like. Giving money in general may buy them a hot drink or a sandwich but it is very unlikely to help them in the long run. Therefore, donating money to charities or even putting them in contact with shelters and food banks, are going to make their lives a little bit better.

After speaking with the Oxford Gatehouse homeless shelter, Sasha (CEO) said,

“As a society we need to work collectively so that we have more affordable homes for people, this means things like better rules around how landlords let [to] tenants.”

At Christmas time in particular she said,

“At Christmas it can be really helpful to get involved with one of the local organisations that work with people experiencing homelessness.”

It’s not just The Gatehouse that are looking for volunteers but most homeless shelters in Oxford are in dire need of volunteers this Christmas.

To those out there who may not understand the harsh reality of spending Christmas on the streets, the Gatehouse homeless shelter says,

“You may not believe it but anyone of us could become homeless. We meet people at The Gatehouse from such a wide range of backgrounds. Life can throw unexpected things in our direction that we could never have predicted.”

She continued and said,

“There are also many more people without homes than those sleeping out on the streets, many people spend months on sofas of friends or in hostels or moving between places that can only offer a temporary solution”

The Gatehouse are always looking for volunteers but during the summer months in particular, as many of the volunteers are students and go home in the summer. This means that the shelter finds it really difficult to run its services.

When you are sitting round your table this Christmas eating your three course meal or opening your new MacBook, remember that there is someone out there on the streets, cold, tired and hungry, just trying to get through another year.

It’s an autumn afternoon on the Central Line. The underground train you’re sat on comes slowly to a halt at Notting Hill Gate, the brakes gently squealing. The doors slide open and off get those wearing Bathing Ape hoodies and overly ripped jeans. On walk those wearing technical Patagonia fleeces and a plethora of brightly coloured Arc’teryx Beta jackets, all being unzipped following a recent rain shower. You notice how nylon begins to sit where denim used to, but someone notices you staring. You look straight back at your own feet, but you live in London in 2026, so you’re wearing a pair of Salomon XT6’s, as well as everyone else on the train.

Gorpcore is (or was) the fashion trend around wearing traditionally technical, functional outdoor clothing in juxtaposing settings, trading the Alps for Aldgate East. I bet you whatever’s in your wallet that you can’t guess where the word ‘Gorp’ actually originates from. Gore-Tex? Great outdoors? Nope. It was coined originally by American writer Jason Chen in 2017, taking its name from trail snacks usually stored in the pockets and eaten by those wearing technical clothing – ‘Good Ol’ Raisins and Peanuts’, or ‘Gorp’ for short. So, if you’d like to send your wallet contents to our offices that would be greatly appreciated.

Gorpcore has always been present, despite its recognition in 2017. Cities like New York, Copenhagen, Tokyo, as well as London, had begun to see increases in outdoor clothing becoming more of a regular staple. More exposure came from celebrities like Frank Ocean unintentionally becoming the Gorpcore poster boy at Paris Fashion Week in 2019.

Ocean rocked up sporting a Mammut Eigorjoch puffer and Diemme hiking boots, topped off with an Arc’teryx Toque beanie. This casually sent the fashion world into a frenzy, remarking upon the outfits blend of comfort yet readiness for any eventuality.

Lockdown proved to be a rapid accelerator for Gorpcore as well. Remember all those walks and bike rides you were going on whilst big Boris was telling us to stay home? And remember the sheer amount of time you spent on TikTok? Well both of those factors married together quite nicely.

Outerwear became more essential, and TikTok ‘Fit Checks’ and ‘OOTD’ (Outfit of the Day) trends became more frequent on our For You Pages. Gorpcore started to become more of a trendy choice.

When the world finally started getting back to normal, it was evident that Gorpcore was here to stay. People were purchasing technical outerwear without intention of utilising any of the features listed on the website. Brands responded, increasing availability worldwide. However, as the cultural value of certain products rose, so did their financial value. An Arc’teryx shell jacket used to set you back around £300. Nowadays if someone sold one for that price, you’d assume it to be a fake, with new examples being listed currently at over £600.

London has transcended the ‘trendy’ phase of Gorpcore now. In reality, it has actually just become the norm. I challenge anyone spend more than ten minutes in the capital without seeing a vintage The North Face fleece of any description.

Vi, a nineteen-year-old second year art student at UAL, tells us about her discovery of Gorpcore, and how she incorporates it into her everyday life:

“Honestly, my go to pub look is just layering – a corny graphic tee underneath a Columbia shell jacket is all I need.

“I’m also a fan of these baggy Nike ACG trousers I found on Depop, with a pair of Oxblood chunky loafers poking out.

“I found out about Gorp from Mimi Moocher, inspired from her travelling fits. The fact it also stands for Good Ol’ Raisins and Peanuts as well. I never knew that”

London has become a natural home for Gorpcore, and when you break it down, it’s not hard to see why. The city demands constant movement; vast, overcomplicated stations, busy streets, the inevitability of the Lime Bike. It’s a city that, at times, can require the vast range of different technologies offered by leading brands.

Salomon’s AC Muscle midsole foam comes into its own when walking thousands of steps across town, and Patagonia’s R1 Air breathability is vital on a humid summer’s day in the city.

However, the most important weapon in a London Gorpcore wearers arsenal is the shell jacket, and the best of those utilise Gore-Tex technology. For those that have never visited the UK, or maybe just those that live under pretty massive rocks, you need to know that Britain is wet. Very, very rainy indeed.

For those living in Blighty, Gore-Tex is essential; an ultra-thin membrane developed in the sixties, designed to always keep the wearer dry and protected from the wind, all in a garment that doesn’t compromise on breathability.

The Gore-Tex label is still seen as the ‘gold standard’ waterproof standard in the outdoors world, and ironically finds itself very much at home hanging on the back of a pub chair in Soho. Londoners usually prefer the technology in Arc’teryx Beta form, or maybe in The North Face GTX Mountain Jacket, sometimes even in their Salomon trail shoes. But the shell jacket is always the centrepiece of any Gorpcore outfit, especially to Londoners that are just nipping into the office or jumping on a Lime bike for a drink later. The shell is their natural defence against the city’s unique climate of, well, rain.

To someone visiting London for the day, they may assume everyone around them wearing identical outfits; a waterproof jacket rolled at the waist, a pair of technical, baggy trousers (or loose fit jeans), and some sort of Salomon trail shoe of choice. They may, however, be oblivious to the subtle differences between products, from one Gorper to the next. For example, they may not realise the sheer difference in price from trail shoe to a regular Adidas Samba. Or the nuances between different types of Arc’teryx jacket.

As I hope you are aware at this stage, Arc’teryx jackets are expensive. Like, really expensive. That’s why second-hand marketplaces are crawling with fakes at a fraction of the price. If you were to go directly to the website and order one, however, you could be looking at an £800 bill. Even the humble beanie, a staple of Gorpcore, could set you back as much as £60.

With the immense financial value also comes the weight of cultural value when wearing an Arc’teryx Alpha SV jacket; other Gorpcore wearers in their The North Face shells and Patagonia fleeces would know exactly what they were seeing, and the price paid by the wearer.

Value is often reflected through recognition, not communication when it comes to Gorpcore. The subtle hierarchies are layered just like their technologies, with a vast scale of values between items.

Now, truth be told, I have probably used the term Gorpcore far more than it’s really been used in the past year or so. That’s because it isn’t really a conventional ‘trend’ anymore. It moved into Londoners lives over eight years ago, and has settled in very nicely indeed. The technical jackets and chunky trail shoes that once signalled the beginning of a new movement are now looked upon as ‘normal’. In fact, they are not even looked upon, they just blend into everyday London life.

Miles and Millie move through the city without distinction; no one looks twice as they sift through long queues for the tube. Those attuned to Gorpcore will understand and respect their outfits, as they remain invisible to others. Gorpcore has outgrown definitions. People once took to the streets in technical clothing to stand out, and in 2026, people do the same just to blend in. It absorbed into the rhythms of the city, the weather, the transport, the ‘rat race’ that tens of thousands find themselves in every day. In London, Gorpcore hasn’t disappeared – it has simply become the everyday uniform.

From consent education to sex toy bingo, Oxford Brookes once again took on SHAG week for the third year running.

This year SHAG week kicked off with sex toy bingo, with sexual bingo calls and sexy prizes to be won. It was a relaxed and fun evening, with even a free soft drink at half term from the union bar.

Day two took on a sold out 0% sculpt and sip evening, which was incredibly popular. It saw everything from sculpted bodices to snowmen, everyone had the chance to sculpt anything and there was even the chance to have won a tote bag.

Although there were even more fun activities like bracelet making on day three and a tv chill night on day four, there was also free STI testing, as well as a ‘Let’s Talk Consent’ workshop. This is really important for University students to have access to these opportunities along with undoubted support.

SHAG week was all about having fun, but it was also an important week to educate and learn about safe sex, as having the opportunity to learn about your own sexual health and wellbeing.

Round 10 saw the Formula One circus roll into Spa-Francorchamps for the Belgian Grand Prix, two weeks post Charles Leclerc’s unlikely victory in Silverstone.

It was a weekend dominated by the Mercedes, seemingly unstoppable through sectors One and Three. Antonelli took pole by an impressive margin of three tenths to Max Verstappen, despite receiving ample slipstream from Red Bull teammate Isack Hadjar.

Antonelli made a decent start, but it was Verstappen who used his battery to squeeze ahead of the Mercedes driver by the start of the Kemmel straight. This proved to be a premature use of his electrical energy, however, with both Antonelli and a surging Leclerc overtaking the Dutchman before the braking zone for Les Combes.

This is where it all came undone for George Russell, who later blamed his battery for not recharging through Turn One. He was left exposed on the long run up to Les Combes, providing opportunity to Lewis Hamilton who drew alongside the Mercedes on corner entry. A moment of understeer from the Ferrari forced the contact that sent Russell pirouetting.

“I shouldn’t have been in that position in the first place. That’s why I’m most angry. The incident with Lewis, honestly, I think was a racing incident.

“He didn’t do it on purpose. He was more to blame than me. But he didn’t do anything reckless. That was one of those things.”

The FIA seemed to view the incident slightly differently, handing Hamilton a five-second penalty following the contact.

Antonelli went on to win his first race since Monaco, with Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen rounding out the podium positions. Russell has been left with a mountain to climb, with the current gap between himself and his teammate stood at 55 points.

The teams will be in transit to the Hungaroring, just outside of Budapest, for the final round before the summer shutdown.

Reflecting on the first half of this season, you have to admit that Antonelli holds all the cards. His teammate must be looking forward to the second half of the season (which he has historically performed well in) and kissing the European leg goodbye. A resurgence to the summit of the Drivers’ table would herculean effort from the Briton.

Ferrari look like they have race-winning pace from time to time, but usually need to rely on a Mercedes mistake in order to win. However, victories for both Lewis and Charles and Lewis within the last five weeks has proved to both the Scuderia and the Tifosi that victories are still possible.

Despite the FIA declaring the Red Bull-Ford power unit as ‘the best’, it seems as if the car is rarely to Verstappen’s taste, with Spa only providing his third podium of the season. Rumours continue to loom over Verstappen’s future in the sport, let alone within the Milton Keynes outfit. Hadjar has had one of the best starts to a season in the ‘second’ Red Bull since 2018, only 30 points behind Max.

McLaren found some good pace in Spa but were hindered by damage to Piastri’s car due to a small collision early in the race, and reigning World Champion Lando Norris had a ten-place penalty to contend with after an engine change before qualifying.
