A Century of Flavor: Brown's Café Marks Its 100th Anniversary
This Oxford café has become a timeless gathering place over the course of a century.
The beloved Brown’s Café in Oxford’s historic Covered Market is marking its 100th anniversary—a century of serving traditional full English breakfast, spaghetti bolognese, shepherd’s pies and unforgettable memories.
Established in 1924 by Catherine Brown in a time when female entrepreneurs were rare, this charming café became a cornerstone of the market. When she passed away in 1977, two Portuguese entrepreneurs took over, preserving its name while infusing a touch of their own heritage. Their rich, aromatic roast coffee quickly became a favorite, evoking a sense of home for many of its visitors.
As one loyal customer reflected, “When I go back to New Zealand, I’ll miss this place with all my heart. If a café can do that, I think it’s a special place.”
Brown’s Café isn’t just a place to eat; it’s a haven of connection. Over the years, it has witnessed first dates, heartfelt reunions of friends from across the globe, and quiet moments of solitude as visitors watch the world go by through its windows. It’s a tapestry of cultures, languages, and shared stories woven together by the café’s enduring charm.
In a fast-changing world, Brown’s Café stands as a beacon of comfort and familiarity. Here, time seems to pause as you savor a cup of coffee or a traditional British pastry. It’s more than a café; it’s a living memory, a safe place where the past and present meet.
“Long live Brown’s, we do our best and hopefully that’s enough”- Says one of the owners.
