Brookes Annual SHAG Week Marked a “SMASH” By Students!
"SHAG week marked a success after aims to empower and educate students lead to sell out events by the union."
Oxford Brookes hosted their annual ‘SHAG Week’ events this week which aimed to promote safe sex practices, as well as educating on the importance of consent and busting sex related myths.
Activities included a ‘SHAG’ (which stands for Sexual Heath and Guidance) themed Bingo night and a clay body sculpting session.
The union were running free STI checks for any students as well as multiple fun pop-up stalls in which students had the opportunity to win prizes, such as condoms and sex toys.
The union president Jacob, said that “one of my manifesto points is to develop the existing ‘SHAG week’ initiative, increasing the frequency of on-campus sexual health screening and implementing HIV testing”. The campaign is aimed to empower and educate the students of Brookes on all things sexual health.
The response from Brookes Students was resoundingly positive. We spoke with some students who attended the SHAG week events who said that they felt “It was a fun way to de stigmatise conversations about sex” and that they “think it's good that [the union] are able to run these events for students because it allows us to feel safe and comfortable and make the union a more approachable place, it was a smash!”.
