Could this new camera make The Plain roundabout safer for cyclists?
The beady-eyed amongst you may have spotted a new Automatic Number Plate Recognition camera at roundabout which is aimed at preventing an illegal left turn into Iffley Road
A new Automatic Number Plate Recognition camera has been introduced in recent months at the Plain roundabout in Oxford, aimed at preventing a left turn from Cowley Road into Iffley Road which can endanger cyclists. Although the turn was already illegal, Oxfordshire County Council believe the camera will allow for better enforcement.
A number of incidents, especially the death of Ling Felce in March 2022, has made travelling through the roundabout as a cyclist a daunting prospect. Despite the changes that may need to be made to make cycling safer in the city, new safety measures divide opinion in the city. I spoke to cycling campaigner Danny Yee and other local Oxians to get their thoughts on this new camera and the dangers of the Plain roundabout.
