Cyclists Rally for Safer Roads in Oxford
The Glow Ride 2025 and Vision Zero highlight safety while cycling and sets the tone for broader road safety initiatives in the city.
The Oxford Glow Ride 2025, an event designed to promote women’s safety while cycling through the dark, had around 70 cyclists come together to advocate not just for women safety, but also for road safety and infrastructure.
This ride, On 22nd October, 2025, organized by Cycling UK in collaboration with the Cowley Road Condors Cycling Club, was part of the national “My Ride, Our Right” campaign, which emphasized the need for better cycling infrastructure and safer streets.
Ruth Prior, the onboarding Women’s Officer for the Cowley Road Condors said, “Oxford likes to call itself a cycling city, but the infrastructure leaves a lot to be desired.
“The road surfaces can be bumpy, and cycle paths often run alongside drains and gravel, which definitely need more attention,” highlighting the necessity of safer roads.
While the Cowley Road Condors held road safety and better infrastructure, Oxford County Council along with Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, Thames Valley Police, Cyclox, and the University of Oxford had initiated Vision Zero event in the Broad Street tomorrow, on the 6th of November, from 10am to 4pm.
This event gives a chance to register their bikes with the police, make repairs and also gain insights of road safety.
Thames Valley Police will carry out the ‘Be Bright, Be Seen’ operation, educating cyclists who put themselves and others at risk by riding without lights, and the University of Oxford will provide a mobile bike mechanic to carry out free safety checks and service.
Together, the Glow Ride and the upcoming Vision Zero event highlight Oxford’s ongoing efforts to improve cycling safety and infrastructure, ensuring the city’s reputation as a cycling city matches the experience on the roads.
