East Oxford Slows its Rush with Longer but Safer Roads
Highway Improvement Scheme at the Westbury Crescent to be delivered by this month.
Roads have been temporarily closed at Westbury Crescent in Oxford, with traffic being diverted through Church Hill because of the roadworks for a new one-way arrangement of the Highway Improvement Scheme.
There are temporary signs at important junctions to help drivers get around the diversion, and the road closure is expected to end by the November 12th, 2025.
The scheme aims to address the local traffic concerns of increased congestion on Church Hill and the adjoining roads, pedestrian and cyclist safety, and the increased noise and air pollution in that area.
Once the one-way arrangement has been delivered, the locals and travellers expect to see:
Rose Hill traffic uses the north side to reach Church Hill Road.
Church Hill traffic uses the south side to reach Rose Hill.
Cyclists can use both sides in both directions.
Planters and green space slow traffic.
Double yellow lines prevent unsafe parking.
While pedestrians and cyclist access remains open, motorists and drivers are advised to follow diversion signs, particularly during morning and evening rush hours. Local residents have reported heavier traffic along Church Hill since the closure began.
The roadworks are expected to continue over the coming days, with the council set to announce reopening dates once repairs are complete.
