Halloween Haunts and Diwali Delights -Together this time in Oxfordshire
Oxford unites in Festive Spirit as Diwali and Halloween Coincide
Oxford residents experienced a unique blend of cultural festivities as Diwali and Halloween fell on the same day this year, October 31st. With vibrant celebrations across the city, Oxfordshire was alive with lights, costumes, and community spirit as both events were embraced by locals and students alike.
At Oxford Brookes University, all students from different backgrounds gathered to celebrate Diwali, marking the Hindu festival of lights with traditional music, dance, and delicacies. "This has made us feel closer to home," shared Ayush Chandormar, a Master’s program student from Oxford Brookes University. "It’s heartwarming to see everyone, regardless of background, join us in celebrating."
Meanwhile, Oxfordshire residents also celebrated Halloween with enthusiasm, transforming homes and streets with spooky decorations, pumpkin carving, haunted costumes and hosting trick-or-treating for families. Many locals found joy in the convergence of these two holidays. "Halloween and Diwali together make for an incredible mix of cultures and celebrations," said Oxford resident Evan. "It’s fantastic to see our city light up with both traditions."
For some, the overlap offered a fresh perspective. “Halloween is all about costumes and fun, but Diwali brings a spiritual aspect, celebrating light over darkness, it’s a perfect harmony.” said Layla Matthews, another resident.
This year’s dual celebration highlighted Oxford's multicultural spirit, creating a night that blended traditions from around the world and brought communities closer.
