In Review: Polling Stations Across Oxfordshire
Oxford City Council is currently undertaking its 5-year review of polling stations and districts across the county. But what does it mean for Oxfordians?
It means that the locations where we vote (town halls, community centres, etc.) could change, and while there’s no guarantee, it is a possibility.
In taking this action, the council aims to ensure that its polling stations are adequate to meet the needs of constituents—whether it’s wheelchair access, location, or other factors—within the polling districts.
A polling district is a geographical area that determines where electors vote and is part of a larger electoral area, such as a Parliamentary constituency.
The review seeks to assess whether the current arrangements work effectively for Oxfordshire.
The consultation process is open, with the public invited to submit feedback by November 18th, 2024. All representations will be published once received.
Why is this taking place?
Local authorities across England are required to review their polling districts and places every five years, as mandated by the Representation of the People Act 1983. The aim is to ensure that voting facilities are well-located and accessible to electors.
The council will submit the final draft of the schedule for approval to the Full Council on January 27th, 2025, with the revised polling scheme coming into force on February 3rd, 2025.
