Building connections with creativity: The latest from Oxford Brookes’ LGBTQ+ Network
With more members joining, the Network is moving beyond the usual social gatherings
Oxford Brookes’ LGBTQ+ Network is on a roll with new events and a growing community, creating a welcoming space where students can relax, connect and feel supported.
One recent favourite was the “Mini Ceramic Pumpkin Decorating” event, held on Monday, October 28, in the Union Gallery. The event drew in over 40 students for an hour of creativity and relaxation. The pumpkins quickly became a “backdrop” as students from all kinds of backgrounds and identities filled the room with conversations and laughter.
Some made small talk, while others - like the writer - found themselves discussing more serious topics, from LGBTQ+ rights worldwide, like the fact that male homosexuality is still illegal in Zambia, to how celebrity culture impacts journalism and even what humanity’s future might look like if a convicted felon wins the U.S. presidential election.
As Vice-Chair Adrienne Golson put it, “The main goal of this event was for everybody to enjoy themselves and build friendships and connections. It’s a bit of a break from assignments and university”.
“University is so stressful. Things are expensive. That's why this event is free so people don't have to pay to get Halloween decorations. They can make their own” Golson added.
Looking ahead, the LGBTQ+ Network has more creative events lined up. “We’ve got a documentary screening and pizza night coming up for Sexual Health Awareness Week,” Golson shared, “and we’re also planning a Christmas arts and crafts meeting at the end of November.”
If these upcoming events bring the same energy as the pumpkin decorating one, the LGBTQ+ Network is set to keep building a lively, inclusive community for all.
