London Fashion Week: Is luxury street style the trend this winter?
Burberry’s Autumn Winter 2024/2025 collection brings British street style to London Fashion Week in a classic way.
Ever thought about making your umbrella an accessory rather than a necessity? Then this Burberry Autumn Winter 2024/2025 show was perfect for you.
As London Fashion Week celebrated its 40th anniversary, brands gathered to showcase their recent collections and British luxury brand, Burberry, was the standout.
Burberry’s show, closing London Fashion Week, was nothing short of classic and reflective of the environment they showcased their designs in, displaying functionality fitting the setting of a British winter. Set to the soundtrack of Amy Winehouse the show was set in London, designed for London. Designer, Daniel Lee, commented backstage that the target audience of this collection, as stated on Vogue Runway, was for “everyone from royalty to the streets”. Burberry as a brand being marketed to appeal to everyone is evident in the careful choices made in the ready-to-wear designs presented. And throughout the show Burberry referenced notable prints or people as the show included Burberry’s iconic plaid pattern and trench coats as well as including supermodel Naomi Campbell on the runway.
Iconography in fashion is very important as it distinguishes an identifiable brand that even people who may not consume their branding or purchase their collections may be familiar with. Burberry utilised this through their collection, likely to reference their work during the 40 years of London Fashion Week.
As the show began to start the lights dimmed, highlighting the runway moulded around the star-studded attendees. The show then transported you instantly into a different environment as the lights created a set that felt as though the models were walking under street lights, as the seating around was in complete darkness. The imagery of the setting created a story through the way the collection was presented, you could envision these outfits on the street on a winter’s night.
Burberry displayed a range of muted tones to fit the bleak wintertime theme by using a palette that consisted of neutral colours like brown and green, occasionally featuring a pop of colour in the form of a purple coat or a pair of red boots.
The scene is set, the models have descended through the crowd, but the clothes spoke for themselves. The collection then began with trench coats (a British weather must have!) that moved into leather skirts and low V-neck shirts, before diving into the world of fur.
The collection also thrived in functionality. Trending mini skirts and dresses are arguably not highly functional in the winter so Burberry’s inclusion of long floor length skirts and trousers to compliment items in this collection, such as the jumpers and fur-lined trench coats, was a perfect observation and solution as well as leaving options for a shorter, but still warm, style if you wish in their dresses.
Boots were another staple piece that featured in a majority of the looks presented on the runway. The knee-high and ankle boots either created an eye-catching contrast to the outfits but complimented them perfectly, or the boots fit a monochromatic look to cohesively bring the styling together.
The collection not only fit a fashionably functional look in its womenswear, as the menswear also had cohesive street style looks that adhered to current trends but taking a classic approach. Suits are usually featured in menswear collections, but what can be done to make it original, whilst also maintaining its timeless look? Burberry merged recent trends with the classic construction of a suit by presenting an oversized silhouette that mixes professionalism with street style as it was paired with other featured items such as low V-neck shirts or a classic Burberry plaid scarf. The suits were mostly monochromatic pulling together a cohesive look though possibly being perceived as more casual.
Burberry in this collection set the trend for winter, fringe. The fringe featured on multiple different occasions throughout the show, but makes its most eye-catching debut on the dresses. One in particular, a pastel yellow dress, utilises beaded fringe in a beautiful way that stands out across everything else in the show as it shone as the model walked down the runway. The fringe was a great addition to each piece that stood out against the classic fur and leather highlighted on other pieces.
The accessories were on brand throughout and conformed to popular trends such as tote and duffle bags for everyday street style as well as patterned scarves and sunglasses throughout the entire show to complement each look. And to top off a show that alludes to British fashion and functionality, the most functional accessory featured were umbrellas that matched seamlessly to each outfit they were paired with.
The realistic interpretation of British winter fashion paired with luxury and everyday street style, makes Burberry’s collection one to look at. Burberry’s Autumn Winter 2024/2025 collection ended London Fashion Week on a high, displaying why Burberry will always create timeless but modern looks that are here to stay.
