Mixed reactions as Oxford prepares for Christmas, “They’re a bit boring.”
Oxford High Street has become increasingly festive over the past few weeks. However, some shops are doing Christmas better than others.
The Old Bank Hotel and The Ivy have received the best feedback on their decorations with one local saying “they are the best in Oxford”.
The director of property and projects at the Old Bank Hotel told us “We will install around 40,000 lights and use around 3000 cables ties in the process.” The Old Bank Hotel has gone for the same decoration they do each year, a forage of tree branches with fairy lights. It has a classy look and matches the expensive appearance of the hotel.
The Ivy has placed their snowmen, skis and Christmas trees outside their door. The extensive decorations including lit up Christmas trees and wreaths were described as “cheery and festive” by local Annabelle Black.
Down the road, Fat Face has brought an alternative and modern Christmas look to the Highstreet. The look doesn’t necessarily match the rest of the road as student Evie Phipps said “It doesn’t scream Christmas. I don’t love it compared to some of the other shops.”
Another shop with bad reviews is The White Company. With their bland Christmas Trees sit sadly in their shop window. Their decorations are arguably some of the worst in Oxford however they do match the simplistic and chic brand. Local Lucy Pilkington said, “they are pretty boring.”
Everyone loves and looks forward to Christmas and shop windows help contribute to the festive spirit, and boost’s businesses. The director of property and projects at the Old Bank Hotel says “without question” the decorations encourage people to visit their restaurant.
