Brookes smashing Movember: over £14,673 raised
Once again, Oxford Brookes University joins the Movember movement, aiming to raise funds for men’s physical and mental health.
This November, 30 Brookes’ sports teams and students have joined again the Movember Foundation, intending to raise £22,000 by the end of the month.
Sports clubs have organised activities during the month to reach the goal both individually and on teams.
“It’s such a good opportunity to bring awareness and support to a cause that needs more recognition”, Brookes Dance Captain Aimie Blick has pointed out. “Men’s mental health issue is something that needs to be spoken about more, and Movember is a great way to do this”. Aimie’s team has raised over £200 so far.
Brookes has been part of Movember since 2019. The foundation, which fights for men’s mental health, suicide prevention, and prostate and testicular cancer since 2003, has supported over 1,250 projects for men’s health worldwide.
A leaderboard on the foundation’s website shows the amount every sports team has raised, embracing fundraising through healthy competition. This year Hockey leads the board, followed by Netball and Tennis sports clubs.
Sports teams have organised events such as pub quizzes, dressing-up runs, and sports matches against eachother. Students have also joined individually willing to raise money by completing sports challenges. Ollie Powell, leader of the individual board, has raised over £1,210 so far by completing a daily challenge of running 15km.
Oxford Brookes has reached impressive milestones in previous years, raising nearly £52,000 in 2020, and over £25, last year.
