Movember Madness at Oxford Brookes Uni
Each year, Oxford Brookes University take on the challenge of trying to raise as much money as possible in their sports teams for Movember.
Movember is a global charity that raises funds and awareness for men’s health. It focuses on men’s health such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.
Different teams take it upon themselves to come up with the best ways to raise money for charity.
Florri Smith, 20, and Oscar Pitman, 19, who are welfare committee members of the Brookes hockey team said: “The Hockey team have organised blind dates, which is a good way of meeting new people.
“Owen Lloyde from the men’s 1s is running 15km every day in order to raise money for charity.Brooke’s hockey raised £3200 last year and went above this already, currently at £4100.”
The sports teams have taken part in events all around Oxford such as runs and auctions, all for raising money for Movember.
A charity football match took on Sunday, where each sport team played a game of 5-A-side football. This consisted of a men and a women’s team, dressed up in fancy dress to raise money for Movember.
The Movember 5-A-side tournament raised £788 for the charity. The winner of the charity matches was the Brookes men’s water sport society and the women’s rugby team.
Brookes Hockey club also took part in a 5km fancy dress charity run through the streets of Oxford where crowds cheered from the pavement.
Oscar Robinson, 20, from the men’s rugby team stated,
“We’re organising a half marathon and a pub quiz at the black swan”
“It’s a good opportunity to get together with other clubs”
“We are also doing an auction which always does very well for Movember”
Movember encourages men to grow moustaches as a symbol representing healthier men in a healthier world and demonstrates that they are raising money for Movember.
The campaign this year is ‘move for the mental health’ which encourages people to run or walk 60km over Movember as a reminder that 60 male suicides take place every hour.
On the 21th of November, Oxford Brookes partnered up with Gillette with every £20 donated, Gillette donated £20.
Movember has helped raised money for creating a new technology that could potentially help thousands of men avoid invasive tests to check if they have prostate cancer.
