Oxford Brookes University students come together to raise money for Movember
Societies set challenges over November, raising thousands of pounds every week for Movember.
Societies at Oxford Brookes University have collectively raised £14,000 so far this November in support of Movember through challenges to grow moustaches and charity events.
Movember started in 2003, in Australia, when two friends set out to refresh the moustache trend. The two friends, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, convinced 30 of their friends to join them in starting the trend, charging them $10 each to grow a moustache to raise money for men’s health, and prostate cancer in particular, after being inspired by a friend’s mother who was raising money for breast cancer.
After much enthusiasm from the 30 friends, the following year, they decided to make it a formal concept, registering the company and setting up a website. That year, 450 people were involved in the campaign and raised $54,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. Since then, Movember has continued to grow at a remarkable pace, with campaigns in 21 countries, raising over $730 million for men’s health programmes.
Numerous societies at Oxford Brookes University have come together to raise money and awareness for men’s mental and physical health. From a commercial dance class combining Oxford Brookes Dance Society and Oxford Brookes Golf Society, to an Oxford Brookes Netball Club vs Oxford Brookes Cricket Club netball match and Oxford Brookes Tennis Club vs Oxford Brookes Hockey Club football match, societies are teaming up to raise as much money and recognition for Movember as possible.
Oxford Brookes University Dance Society member, Alice King, described the joint commercial dance class with the dance society and golf society as, ‘really fun and enjoyable, everyone got involved, no matter their experience, and it was a great way to raise money for Movember’.
Oxford Brookes University Hockey Club alone has raised nearly £5,000 for Movember through various sports matches over the month.
As well as societies getting involved in Movember, individual Oxford Brookes University students have set their own special challenges by running marathons and raising hundreds of pounds.
Speaking to Dan Tibbitt, Sports Delivery Manager at Oxford Brookes University, he expressed that, ‘seeing the enthusiasm and creativity from Oxford Brookes Sport Clubs has been truly heartwarming. From dance classes and marathons to challenges and charity matches, their efforts to support causes like Movember have been inspiring. It's wonderful to witness our clubs coming together to give back in such meaningful ways.’
Oxford Brookes University continues to raise thousands of pounds for Movember, hoping to achieve their target of £22,000 by the end of the month.
