At full council on 3 November, council leader, Tim Bearder announced he will write to the Home Secretary and Oxfordshire MPs to call for stronger measures to counteract violence against women and girls.
The Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner will also be contacted to seek assurances that investigations, specialist resources, and officer accreditation are moving forward in the area.
This motion comes after the Office of National Statistics (ONS) reported in June 2026 the highest figures of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAGW) offences across the United Kingdom and Wales in the last six years.
High profile cases have been in the news in recent years such as actor and comedian Russell Brand’s, who was found guilty on one account of rape and three counts of sexual assault against six women today at Southwark Crown Court. The allegations span 10 years starting in 1999.
Councillor Kate Gregory, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Inequalities, said: “By working together locally and calling for stronger national action, we can help create safer communities for everyone.”
According to their press release, the council will take forward actions within their control to locally prevent harm, safeguard, educate, and support those affected by these serious crimes.
Councillor Kate Gregory, stated, “this motion reaffirms our commitment to supporting victims and survivors, promoting healthy relationships and challenging the attitudes and behaviours that can lead to abuse.”
