Thames Valley Police are cracking down on shoplifters this Christmas, increasing patrols in high streets and shopping areas across the region. Officers are working closely with retailers to catch offenders and protect staff and shoppers during the busy festive season.
Figures show that in October 2025, shoplifting charges rise by 21% compared with same period last year, while out of court resolutions increased by 10%. Police say the holiday rush and high value items make it easier for thieves to target stores, but anyone caught stealing will face arrest.
“Shoplifting not only affects local businesses but also puts retail staff at risk,” a Thames Valley Police spokesperson said. “We are working closely with retailers, using CCTV and increasing patrols to trace offenders quickly and effectively and prevent theft.”
Retailers are being advised to stay alert to suspicious behaviour. Signs can include shoppers who focus more on staff than products, engage in unnecessary conversations, browse aimlessly, appear nervous, pick-up items randomly, visit frequently without purchasing, or repeatedly asks for locked cabinets to be opened but leave without buying.
Police stress that these behaviours do not automatically indicate criminal activity. Staff should always treat customers respectfully and within the law while remaining observant. Maintaining a welcoming environment is key, but awareness can help prevent theft during the busy shopping season.
The force hopes the combination of increased patrols and vigilance will reduce theft and keep shopping areas safer during festive period.
Members of the public can report theft in progress by calling 101, and retailers can report incidents through store security channels or local police contact.
