Your guide to the best bucket-list experiences in Mexico this summer
If you’re looking for the perfect mix of relaxing five-star resorts, unique wildlife and thrilling day trips, Mexico’s Yucatan region should be your next destination
Once an important region for the ancient Maya civilisation, Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is now a major tourist hotspot, attracting over 2.1 million visitors in 2019, accounting for 11.1% Yucatan’s overall GDP according to UN Tourism.
It’s clear to see why – this Central American paradise is known for its thriving nightlife, tropical beaches, ancient ruins, carefree wildlife and natural cenotes which make it one of the most geographically interesting holiday destinations. If you’re considering a visit to Mexico this summer, here’s a roundup of 5 of the best activities you should add to your itinerary (prices included):
Xplor Park
The Xcaret group of theme parks dominate the Riviera Maya, with 6 different parks offering various unique activities depending on your preference. I opted for Xplor Park, attracted by its range of adrenaline- filled activities both through the jungle and underground in Mexico’s famous caves.
Start with a bumpy ride on the jungle jeeps as you travel through a circuit of twisty paths, hanging bridges and deep caverns.
Next, try one of the huge zipline courses as you speed above the tree canopy for breathtaking views of the Riviera. This one is hard work and does require a lot of steps, but the adrenaline is completely worth it.
Cool down with a relaxing swim through the underground rivers in an ancient cave system full of stalactites and stalagmites, or take in the views by hopping on a 2-person raft instead.
Tickets start at around £110, which includes all activities as well as an unlimited food and drink buffet (which was delicious).
Tulum and Turtles
Many people have heard of Chichen Itza, the famous Mayan pyramid complex in the heart of the jungle believed to be a Wonder of the Ancient World, but do you know about the equally mysterious archaeological sites at Tulum?
Located right on the coast, these ruins will take your breath away as you learn about temples, houses and how this ancient civilisation really lived.
Whilst you’re at the coast, why not visit a nearby beach and snorkel with the turtles? These gentle creatures visit close to the shore and, if you’re lucky, will surface for air right next to you - an unforgettable experience.
For a full day trip including Mayan ruins, snorkelling with turtles, a trip to a nearby Cenote and a delicious beach club lunch, you can expect to spend around £150 each.
Visit the Cenotes
Of course a day out in Tulum would not be complete without visiting one of Mexico’s many Cenotes - an underground river system with crystal-clear filtered water caused by ancient sinkholes filling with rainwater. These are a must-see if you travel to Mexico this year, as there is nothing else in the world like it.
They are a fantastic way to relax and cool down in the shade after a long day in the sun. Just watch out for the bats!
Coco Bongo
Potentially the most unique (and bonkers) nightclub you will ever visit, this venue is inspired by the 1994 film The Mask. Here, you’ll experience Vegas- worthy acrobatic shows and tribute acts as the music pauses for each performance, then goes right back to the biggest party you’ve ever seen.
If you opt for Gold Member tickets, which include a personal butler providing unlimited food and drink for the night plus great views of both stages, expect to pay around £100 each.
Dive over the MesoAmerican Barrier Reef
What better place to do your PADI Open Water Diver Certification than the second- largest reef in the world? You’ll experience unforgettable sights as you glide past vibrant corals and shoals of fish, with a few lobsters and eels thrown in for good measure.
You can expect to pay around £389 (or $500 USD) for the full two-day course plus four dives, which works out significantly cheaper than in the UK.
From the natural beauty of the Cenotes to the cultural heritage of the Mayan ruins, to adrenaline- filled watersports and fantastic food options, Mexico really has something for everyone and should be top of your list for your next adventure.
